I know Ferdinand gets a lot of stick for his injury problems but I just want to say how well he's done for us this season when he does play. For the most part we have looked at our best defensively when he has been fit and playing and Cooper seems to be benefiting from playing alongside him. It's no coincidence that McShane's performances dipped when Ferdinand got injured and Hector came in.

It's just a shame his injuries have been so frequent and taken attention away from his performances. We look so much better and more assured with him in the team.

massive +1, positionally he is superb - he never has to run, he is always right place right time, if he can stay fit i would happily give him a new contract (pay as you play of course) he will be fantastic for the likes of Coopers' development and he is still only 30. If managed correctly ala Paul McGrath we could get another 4 years out the guy.

Not only can he defend, he's comfortable on the ball. He doesn't panic like Hector does which then just invites pressure back onto us after a dodgy clearance.

His class (which I admit I didn't think he really had) shines through at times. He reads the game so well and is an assuring presence for the likes of Cooper, I'm sure.

He also looks like he is grateful that we gave him a route back into English football, and is trying to repay the faith we showed when he was injured too.

Added to that, he's a good ambassador for the club and seems to keep out of trouble.

I would give him another year.

He's a calming influence and pretty reliable when called upon.

have to! would be madness not to.... unless of course he is unwilling to sign a pay as you play, then that's a whole different ball game, it would be a massive gamble, he looks as though he is one big tackle away from retirement

I would give him a new contract without a doubt - especially with Gunter's contract running down. For me he's our best defender, and if we were to lose Gunter/Taylor I would be very worried about the experience our defence has if McShane was injured, which considering he seems to pick up little niggles is a likelihood. He can only be good to have around the club and must be doing our youngsters the world of good during training.

Agree with the Sandman re: performance and would give him a new contract, with some sort of release/rolling/year-by-year clause if he's going to be injured for 80% of a season. You can be unlucky, but you can also be injury prone through your own mismanagement, so we need some protection/way of getting rid of him ahead of time too.

Four centre-backs is the dream for a squad - two starters, one challenger, one youth coming through.

To be fair, nobody agrees with anybody on here....even if they are in complete agreement. I'm the Corbyn of this board, looking for a new kind of forum politics.

Even when he played last season he showed his quality, albeit extremely briefly. This season he has, again, been superb when he's played, bar the game against Huddersfield at the madejski when he came back from injury.

Maybe an appearance weighted contract, I doubt he will argue with that decision, But he might be tempted elsewhere - He did sign for Thai Police United or whatever they're called, possibly on superstar wages.
