It's got charm, for sure. The glamour isn't always there.

It's always good to play against different opponents than the usual, if the draw allows, and the games are usually more open than in the league. I enjoy it and the chance to be drawn against anyone, as opposed to having a seeding system, is a great incentive.

IIRC that 1976-77 game was when we got three penalties. Minty Murray scored the first two and missed the third and a very rare type of hat trick.

Way back Walsall were always known to be a particularly dirty side and after one bloodbath in the mid 60s I believe (wasn't there guv, honest) Reading fans attacked their team coach / players in Norfolk Road.

Add to which - that baffling defeat at Cardiff ... we got a few demons to lay to rest on 30 Jan. The Cup will be more to us than them by then.

CountryRoyal You can see one of their stands really clearly from the M6.

That's about all I can comment on Walsall.

You can see the top of the home end (the seats), and the outside of the away stand. The away stand is one of the coldest places in football (separate thread?) - it's sheltered, never sees the sun and probably still has ice in it in July.

Lincoln and Inverness Calie Thistle spring to mind

I remember going to Fellows park in the early 80s winning 2-1 and Neil Webb scored a last minute header, going mental in the rain on the open terrace behind the goal with about 20 other Royals who made the trip. :D :D :D Happy Days

I wonder if they'll watch the Rochdale game for pointers on how to really nullify Walsall since they dicked them 3-0 away from home and only allowed them 3 shots, 0 on target.

On another note, just realised their keeper was in the same year of school as me.

Love that mate, love it.

I wouldn't say no to a replay - never been to the Bescot Box

I was one of those 20 :D One of the rare away days where I was in three sides of the ground during the game. Can recall a very beery day ending in Webb's goal just in front of us :D thanks for the memory.

Only went to Fellowes Park once, in 1986 during our easy romp to the Division 3 title. Of course we got stuffed 6-0. I remember most of the game being a bit windy and there being a never ending succession of throw ins...

Team that day was; Westwood, Richardson, Wood, Hicks, Peters, Beavon, Burvill, Gilkes, Horrix, Platnauer, Senior and our Maltese international Brian Roberts made a rare appearance as a sub.

Yep, was at that '86 game too :( Been once before that to a night game at Fellows Park and only once to the Bescot. Strange construction for today's new builds as it still has stanchions for the roof.

Fellows Park was a dingy ramshackle ol' place. Although, I do remember a wall collapsing there when they played Liverpool in the home leg of the league cup semi final once back in the 80s when it was full to bursting.

Walsall were for many years a similar (ish) club to Reading until we got pimped up. They suffer from being in a congested football area with bigger clubs all around and you'd imagine a sizable attendance there would be made up of a lot of second club type fans who usually go to Wolves/Baggies/Villa et al

Put the U21's out, as we're concentrating on mid table push ..

Went to our game at Fellows Park in early 1990 which was one of their last at that old, ramshackle stadium; highlights were the 15' fencing, the year out of date Wagon Wheels from their kiosk, and getting Aidy Williams and David Leaworthy to pose for a photograph during their warm up in the middle of the game.......I genuinely have virtually zero recall of the game though remember it ended up as a 1-1 draw.

Apparently, the Walsall fans in the stand at the Bescot that faces the M5 start to make a mooing sound whenever on of those milk delivery trucks painted like a Friesian cow goes past on the motorway.......

I can remember a game at Fellows Park early 1980's - freezing cold day we lost 2-1 and Ollie Kearns scored for them.

Phil Stant scored a late consolation for us but I'd already left.....

Must admit can't remember much good out of Walsall games. The worst though being ' The own goal from hell' in That PO Final. Wouldn't now realistically expect a successful charge on the Play-Offs this season so surely we will give them our utmost attention. Please Brian put them to the sword from the word go and smash them out the cup. As someone posted earlier, We must rid ourselves of some demons next week.
