Extended-Phenotype Owners meddling reaffirmed in McDs interview re: Rakels, aka the reason the owners pulled the plug on Washington:

BM: this has come from the scouts of the owners

CW: do you get the final say? (on Rakels)

BM: do I know him? No. I know Evans well, I knew Kermorgant well. I know Conor Washington really well, I would have liked to sign him but we couldn't do that deal.

But then the plug may have been pulled on the Washington deal for any number of reasons by the owners e.g. agent shenanigans, wage demands etc.

Read between the lines though, fella

Why would Brian mention Washington without provocation in an interview about Rakels?

"Did you want to sign Rakels?''
''he's not my guy. Washington was.''

Yes, agreed that was my take but just wanted to make the point that the Washington deal possibly may have been pulled for other reasons by the board (e.g. money demands) rather than just a whim they'd rather have a Latvian here otherwise why let it go all the way to bidding and talking to Peterborough in the first place.

Anyway if Rakels is a dud and Washington pulls up trees, the abuse the Thais will get is going to be unbelievable.

If we had gone hard for Washington what are the chances QPR would simply have pushed the price up ?
Normal financial rules don't apply to them.

That's because their aren't any financial rules apart from the ones made up in people's heads

I guess that was what I meant !
Normal rule might be 'I've got £1, that's all I can spend'
QPR approach has been 'I want all that, I'll pay whatever and someone will bail me out later'
Although to be fair to QPR they aren't alone in that and Fernandes has been prepared to swallow the losses.

Just what the media shy Peterborough chairman would have been hoping for.

If both sides had agreed fees, it could only push the wage offer up surely.

You can't accept a fee and allow a team to speak to a player, then say 'sorry someone else has bid the same, you need to add another £1m'.
