Royal_jimmy Would show a total lack of ambition from the club if Cooper is sold and I would be extremely gutted.

It wouldnt make any sense for him to go, especially to a team like Stoke where he wont play regularly and end up back on loan at one of our championship rivals. Not a good career move for you Jake. I hope you are reading this!

Why are you surprised ? The owners would sell the carpet if they could make a profit

CountryRoyal I'm with Roal_Jimmy on this one. I thought once Madejski sold up one of the benefits was that, even if we wouldn't go and spend silly money, is that we would be able to retain our players. Ok so he's not our best CB but he's young and has shown great potential and with Hector going he's the most senior young pro we have. When was the last time we actually made a proper effort to keep a player - it seems that at the first offer or there abouts they are off, something which was understandable in the past but harder to swallow these days.

I don't for one minute have any confidence that we "have lined up a replacement" or indeed we will adequately find one any time soon.

Having more money behind us to remove the need to sell to cover the financial blackhole doesn't stop a player wanting to move from a middling Championship club to an established Premier League side who are on the up at the moment.

andrew1957 But it would almost certainly be a terrible move for Cooper. Yet another young player who would sacrifice playing regularly for sitting on a PL bench and most likely never playing much - like so many before him.

Hope for his sake it does not happen as he could become a regular with RFC.

Agreed Andrew. Yeah he might increase his wage tenfold, and you can understand him taking that opportunity, but it's unlikely to do anything for his development.

CountryRoyal Not happy if this is true.

Not long signed a contract extension til 2018 but obviously meaningless, don't agree with it but this is what the owners seemed determined to do, make a profit wherever and whenever they can, then call their football friend in Europe and see who we can snaffle cheap ..

He's not actually that good, is he? £3m+ would be great business. I know he's still very young, but imo he's nowhere near as good as Hector looked when he first burst onto the scene.

More potential than Hector for me, problem will be finding a decent replacement for a couple of million

Or we show ambition and don't sell him. We need to be building a team with players like Cooper. Not average journeymen we bring on the cheap to replace this talent. No offence to Stoke but if he plays regularly, helps gets us promoted then he could easily go to a top 6 club.

Eh? At a similar stage/age as Cooper is filling in with some success in a Championship defence Hector was struggling to hold down a place Aldershot at centre back in League 2 (was moved around the side IIRC) and being called back early from Shrewsbury as he couldn't get in the side.

You'd expect Hector to be further down the line then because he made his debut for us at a later age than Cooper.

CountryRoyal
Nameless Nothing on Talksport website so suggest we all file this under currently completely unfounded.
Apart from CountryRoyal of course who can carry on getting really wound up about it.

You do speak out of your arse sometimes don't you?

If I do,it's only so someone on here is speaking your language...
But be honest, you fly into a frenzy at any half baked rumour. Just wait and reserve the panic for when stuff actually happens , and even then in time you'll find that even if bad stuff seems to happen it's rarely actually that bad and even if it is that bad there's nothing we can do about it so,why panic ? Worry about stuff you can influence.
I'd hate to lose Cooper, I'd think it was the wrong move at the wrong time. But if he wants to go then he'll go. There are a number of very good centre backs in our academy, several better than him, although none ready to step in just yet. If we got the rumoured £5 million I'd expect us to grab a couple of decent players with it, although I won't be getting names on shirts too quickly....

Tbf I didn't realise he'd had so many loans before he made his debut. Thought it was pretty much just half a season at Aberdeen.

Well on the way to being the new Steve Claridge.
Is it a penalty in golf if you have 15 clubs ?

He was farmed all over the place. Rarely did he hold down a place in the centre of defence for most of those sides and was bumped to right back and central midfield too.

One way to look at that is that he's a versatile player and perhaps better on the ball than your average centre back so was moved about. The other way to look at is it is that even at League Two level he wasn't outstanding enough to be the man those sides built their defence around (same thing happened at Aberdeen too).

Cooper is still only 20 and is 25 games into his career. He's way ahead of where Hector was at a similar age.

maffff The other difference between Cooper and Hector is Hector is a London boy who joined us at like 15 or something (and spent almost the entirety of his development with us elsewhere..), Cooper came through at 8 and I don't recall any loans? he probably has more of an attachment to the club...

Think he lives in Lower Earley. My neighbour saw him at Laurel Park towards the end of last season doing keepy uppies with a tennis ball

I wonder if this means that Shawcross is going to Liverpool?
Not that Jake looks ready yet for Premier League football but Stoke do like big players.

Do believe he's a former Laurel Park youth player. Might be confusing him with someone else.

Signed for the club relatively late (14) but no previous clubs, and supported Reading before we signed him.
