It's not about sex though, is it? It's about control, manipulation and playing the game because he thinks he can get away with it.

It doesn't sound like the was a huge amount of manipulation or coercion in this case. It sounds more like the reason he thought he get away with it was because the girl was "well up for it" in his opinion.


It's not easy to see why he'd go for her rather than probably numerous young (but older) women who'd no doubt throw themselves at him. Maybe he thought she'd be happy for a bit of a fumble, rather than wanting a relationship.

Whether she's up for it or not is irrelevant, he's taking advantage of a situation available to him because he is a professional footballer. He chose to take advantage. He was the one being suggestive and controlling and manipulating the situation. Legally she could not give consent, he knew that and had every opportunity to walk away but he chose not to. He could have ended it before it began by saying no.

Well his mrs didn't turn up yesterday so perhaps she's found a way of getting money off of him without being with him anymore. They have a kid together so he'll have to pay for her and i suspect he won't be allowed much contact with the kid once the case is over.

As for the charges he's already admitted guilt to... he really couldn't wait for 9 months? Surely he had plenty of other legal opportunities?!

Even after he's pleaded guilty? Or do the one's he pleaded guilty for carry a sentence of less than 9 months? Don't really think "my client didn't realise a blowie counted" is going to work.

What's stopping him playing in say, France where the legal age of consent is 15 so they probably wouldn't care too much about his conviction?

He's pleaded guilty to grooming and sexual activity. From the reports about both offences it seems he would be facing a starting point of 18 months for the grooming and a touch less for the (limited) sexual activity which he accepts.

The starting point for the grooming will probably be reduced to about 16 months for the guilty plea and he'll serve half - so 8 months. Not far off what Paul said.

The other sexual activity, which he seems to deny happened at all if the press reports are to be believed, are of a more serious nature than the one he's denied, so would attract a sentence significantly in excess of the grooming offence. If it did involve oral penetration he's probably looking at something like 5 year for it (serving half).

Pownall's job is to put enough doubt into the jury's mind so they can't be sure if the other sexual activity happened at all. A remarkably difficult task given a sympathetic 15 year old complainant.

Seb, just taking this slightly off topic for a minute, why does it seem that nobody (that you hear of in the mainstream press at least) seems to serve a full term? Why do most seem to get out early, and what then is the point of the full term sentence if it is less regularly served?

unless he has some weirdy moles or scars on his johnson that she can identify then how can anyone say that oral/vagy/bumfun/airtight lolz etc happened without having some kind of doubt?
