I stand corrected. That was the double header in the North East that season. Workington away on the Saturday and Hartlepool away on the Monday. And yes, Whitham scored his hat-trick versus Hartlepool. Never scored for us before or after.

strap Just from the 70's onwards produces this little lot - some already mentioned of course:

Alan Cockram
Kwesi Appiah
Craig Tanner
Naeem Bashir
Peter Mate
Alex Fernandez
Yakubu
Ola John
Tony Barrass
Bob Hazell
Nigel Vaughan
Sam Sodje
Tony Thorpe
Paul Moody
Mark Matthews
Robert Fleck
Les Ferdinand
Michail Antonio
Denis G Butler
Michael O'Neill
Dave Cowling
Ray Henderson
Lea Barkus
Peter O'Sullivan
Andy McLaren
John AShton
David Madden
George Shipley
Derrick Christie
Nathan Tyson
Neil Clement
George Friel
Matthew Upson
Luke Chadwick
Jason Bowen
Paul Brayson
Kenny Brown
Nathaniel Chalobah
Jimmy Crawford
John Polston
Ulises De La Cruz
Irvin Gernon
Paul Franklin
Peter Grant
Adrian Marippa
Mark Holzman
Keith Jones
Byron Glasgow
Hope Akpan
Ray Flannigan
Ray Houghton
Paul Bodin
Stephen Kelly
Steve Swales
Brian Bason
Steve Brown
Chris Armstrong
Stuart Morgan
Ryan Bertrand
Fred Sharpe
Roger Joslyn
Shaun Cummings
Jordan Obita
Linvoy Primus
Dave Bacuzzi
Will Dixon
Adam Federici

Ok strap, how about listing them by total appearances.

Some names to contemplate there. Dave Cowling, a fat winger from Huddersfield, I remember Nigel Vaughan's goal against Sheffield United, more a case of the ball hitting him than him getting to the ball.

Dave Madden was a cracking player, remember his goal at Selhurst Park. Stuart Beavon scored a beauty that day.

Linvoy Primus, IIRC, he scored in that 3-3 draw with Forest when Steve Stone spooned high and wide from 6yds with an open goal to aim at.

Stone's miss deserves a thread of it's own. Van Hooijdonk had rounded whoever we had in goal that night (think it may have been Nicky Hammond playing injured) before squaring it to Stone. He may have been as far out as 6 yards but as time goes by my memory places him nearer and nearer to the goal-line.

De La Cruz v Sheff Utd by a country mile - which is how far he ran for the goal.

There's some absolute blasts from the past.

Ray Houghton. It only seemed like a year or so before he'd been in the World Cup, challenging for the title with Villa.

Not quite a one goal wonder... But he scored on his substitute debut and I was there... And about 45 others because nightmare journey step forward Uwe Hartenberger.... Never forget the goal at Swansea away and the scenes after lol!

Went on to score 4 more times I believe....

Still love Parky's goal v Wolves in the League Cup where Houghton seemed to want to take the ball off him. Parky just barged him out of the way and launched it into the top corner ..... from the halfway line ..... or our own penalty area ..... or Newbury showground.

Shaun Cummings' goal right at the death of his Reading career sticks in my memory. Underrated servant gives us a golden goodbye.

I'd have put money on Chalobah getting more than one too and maybe Obita.

We averaged a keeper per game that season so it might have been his turn. I remember one game when they were all injured including the loanees, so Hammond played while (presumably the least) injured.

That was against Ipswich. He performed heroics for 70 minutes despite only having 1 working leg and suffered another injury which finished his career. From memory, we lost 1-0.

Incidentally, that Forest game was Mautone's last for us.
