FA Cup memories.

Really enjoyed the away tie at Man City in Jan 93. Goal from Scotty Taylor and we held on for 1-1. Cracking atmosphere in the away end. It was another step in the building process for Mark McGhee and the signs of a really good team were there.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a defeat more than our 3-2 loss to Man United in 2007 (?). We held them 1-1 at Old Trafford, MOTM display from Federici in one of his first matches from us. He was at fault for one of the three goals they scored in the first six minutes in the replay.

In the second half we were the better team, with Lita, Doyle and Kitson all on the pitch and looking threatening. Brynjar hit the bar with a dipping shot late on, which would have made it 3-3 and taken it to extra time.

I think he also said that if the game had gone on for 100 minutes we'd have turned it around in that time.
I lived with a typical plastic United fan at the time and I had a spare ticket, ended up giving it to an old schoolfriend instead. When I got home he was furious I hadn't given it to him.

Reading 1 Bishop Stortford 2 Possibly the worst result in our history? The first and last time we have ever lost at home to a non league team. They looked and played like a pub team yet Reading having a terrible season at the foot of div 3. Contrived to lose. I remember there winning goal like yesterday. About 5 minutes left a rather plump looking midfielder strode forward and smashed it in from 20 yards off the post down the town end, to the delight of the traveling few from Bishops Stortford. I those days the 3rd round was considerd a cup run. Being dumped out in the 1st round in November was a gut wrenching feeling the season was over just relegation to look forward too.

Wasn't that the league cup? I do remember going to Main Road for a 3rd round tie and getting a 1-1 draw. We had a great away following that day made loads of noise I even remember the reporter on 5 live saying how impresed he was with the noise we made.

FA Cup 3rd Rd 1993. Awful journey home in thick fog, worst driving conditions ever. I parked in Kippax St, I couldn't believe there were parking spaces right by the ground. One naïve 20yo who had no idea that this was Moss Side and what parking your car there entailed Lost replay 4-0, was on Sky but most didn't realise as I think it was a last minute switch following another game being P-P

I used to watched the replay of this over and over again on the 'Year of the Royals' VHS with my best mate then head up to the park to recreate the goals.

I think it was 2-1, actually, with a youthful Steve Lomas winner and kamikaze keeping from Andy Dibble trying to play left back

We played Man City in FA Cup 1992/93 and League Cup 1993/94 so might be a source of confusion.

1992 was FA Cup Round 3. 1-1 draw at Maine Road, followed by 4-0 home defeat in Replay.
1993 was League Cup Round 2. 1-1 draw at Maine Road, followed by 2-1 home defeat in 2nd leg. 3-2 defeat on aggregate.

16 Nov 1991 Slough Town v Reading

Got dropped off in Slough town centre. After a bite to eat and a drink we walked from the town up to the ground. About 50 yards ahead of us were a gang of Reading lads. One famously or not so famously known as Chewitt or Hewitt. As we followed they saw two black men getting in their car and so followed racial abuse. The two black men then said something back which led to the Reading fans running after them. They didn't catch them thankfully but decided to kick the shit out of their car.

As we walked further up the road there were a couple of Asian men walking down the underpass. The Reading lot decided to spit on them. Lovely. Further up there road there was a convenience shop with fruit and veg outside. They decided to trash the lot.

Arrived at the ground to witness a proper FA Cup tie. It ended 3-3 and brightened up the day a bit. Thankfully we didn't see them on the walk back from the game.

It's four of the last seven years, not six (unless you consider last year's achievement plus this year's to be "twice in one year").

My first FA Cup game was away to Swindon in 1974. We lost 4-nil. First time I'd ever seen us play in blue shorts with the hoops. I went to away games at Hendon, Wealdstone, Wycombe - oh! - and Portsmouth where we actually managed a win.

Just remembered another classic - away to Barry Town, late 80s? Stuart Beavon's free kick hit the post, smacked the keeper in the face as he turned to see where it had gone, and landed in the net. Barry equalised, then dominated until Trevor Senior grabbed a late winner. Seem to recall there were a lot of "lads" from Cardiff there, even though they had a home game.

As a kid I always dreamed of seeing Reading in the top flight and playing an FA Cup tie at Wembley (ok, so I'd have preferred a final). Done it all now.

I was in the North Stand for that game. Right next to the handful of Bury fans that made the trip. You had to feel a bit sorry for them.
