Owners/board signing players - has it EVER worked?

by royalsroyalsroyals92 » 30 May 2016 18:07

Excuse me if there is a similar thread elsewhere or whatever, feel free to merge BUT, are there ANY examples of teams who's owners and board have signed players for the manager where it has been a successful exercise?

This for me - is more worrying than sacking a manager - even if that is a decision I disagree with extremely. How can you expect a manager to style a team, or play his way when he doesn't get a say in which players he gets? it seems like a gigantic waste of time, money and resources and I'd be really interested to hear if their have been some success stories.

I could probably take the Thai's sacking managers and selling our best players, but this side of the game really bothers me and I, personally, think that they're ruining this football club. The ethos has gone, the spirit has gone, and pretty much most of the values that meant something to me at least, at the club have gone.

Withour giving it too much thought, how about Watford? It's more common across the continent, granted.

Can't argue that Rakels has appeared better (I actually really rate him and feel as if he may score lots next year) - but neither of them were hardly successful!

I'm meaning more as clubs on the whole, as opposed to individuals

Frankly, that might turn out to be 1-0, 0-1 1-1 or 0-0

We need twenty games next season to decide.

I think Rakkels will come good (but we played him a lot different to his previous club)

And Kermie's good form was as a number 10, NOT a target man

3 goals each so far

Admittedly, Kermie had a couple of extra starts

Real Madrid, Manchester City, PSG...

Assuming the owners are still committed to football (avoiding another thread), Clarke was given the keys to the club last summer, sacked a load of staff and built a team that flattered to deceive.

English football is just catching up with other sports where a head coach manages players that are bought in by someone else.

The days of a manager "liking" a player and meeting in a little chef with a brown envelope are fading

Impossible to tell without knowing the inner workings of every club. No way of knowing what the share of involvements are between owner/scouts/management. Reality is probably a shade of grey.

West Brom use this approach to maintain a similar style across managers.

Spurs also rely heavily on Daniel Levy deciding who to sign.

We don't have a DoF or a manager, so somebody is making signings/enquiries. NH and the owners don't have football experience and the only person that does it is the Dutch kid with who's only management experience is Ajax youth

Does it matter? Personally, if the club came out and said we're moving to the continental model of head coach with somebody else making signings, and they told us who it was, I'd give it a go. It's the whole secrecy thing that I don't like.

We all know (from the press) that there's some consultants behind the scenes, so why don't they say - here's our strategy, here's how we're running this football club. Because at the moment we don't have a clue.

From the outside looking in there's a worrying lack of football knowledge "officially" at the club right now

The answer to the original question is ,it has worked for some big teams.

For example, Barça go one step further and the whole football club is built around a SYSTEM of playing football in a certain way, everyone on here has seen how they keep the ball, hundreds of passes, goals not just from up front but by any darting run from the midfield but what is strange is if you watch live the Barça B team, or the youth teams, they play exactly the same way. That means as they develop youth or change managers they tell them how they all know how they are expected to play and the manager can make small variations (like Luis Enrique allowing long balls)
Going back to the post, the board /owners find plaers they think could fit in to that SYSTEM , they DO run it past the manager and then they sign them although I would say its the Owners/Board/Barça scouts that go looking for potential signings, so I would say yes it has worked.

Obviously the biggest worry for us that before even thinking about setting up a playing system right accross the board, i.e 4-4-2, we have owners/Board with little/no football knowledge so they would need a Director of Football who really knows his onions.

Of course for a big, well run club with sh*tloads of money there's no reason at all why it wouldn't work. Most top players will be falling over themselves for the chance to play for the top teams, earning pots of cash in the process. That said it's doesn't always work and hasn't done Liverpool much good in recent seasons. Last week's carry on indicates that we do indeed work this way. Why else would we sign a player on a three year deal and then sack the manager the very next day?
Personally I believe we should go back to letting the manager choose who he wants, after all he's the one with his neck on the line, not the owners. If not I fear we will have a succession of short-term failures coming through door.

Benzema. He may be a scunthorpe but 111 goals in 215 games is certainly a success.

The Pog was Anton's signing, not Brian's. That didn't really work out.

So to summarise, either Kermorgant will be better, or Rakels will be better, or they'll both be about the same?

Next season will be there 7th consecutive season in the premier league.

By modern standards I'd say that's pretty successful.
