MM The fact that the owners pick more of our signings than the 'proper' scouts or manager was a clear and early warning sign that the club had taken a wrong turn, despite Brian trying to play it down at the time. In my opinion, it probably wouldn't have been 'his team' after this transfer window either, so there wasn't much to pin our hopes on anyway.

This raises two important points, IMO.

Firstly, the new world often means that the manager isn't in total control of his squad. It's always been the case to an extent, eg most clubs are selling clubs and lose players they want to keep, but more and more managers are having signings made for them by owners and Directors of Football etc as well and so if that's the modern world we need a manager who is flexible and capable of working within that structure.

Secondly, the people who identified the likes of Rakels, are now some of the 'proper' people tasked with this kind of thing. Our transfer record isn't so bullettproof that we can turn our collective noses up at other scouts opinions and recommendations.

I'm all for a manager being given full control over the building of his squad, but then again I still think players shouldn't be on the pitch if they're not interfering with play and that leaning into someone head to head isn't actually violent conduct. Football is changing though and we just have to, unfortunately, have to live with it.

Or walk away. Plenty of alternatives. Used to be a huge Formula One fan. Still remember walking down the pit lane at Brands Hatch in the Hunt vs Lauda era. Totally lost interest in the years since. Big business dominates. Not a sport.

Roberto Martínez would be my choice.

I think his demeanour, attitude and personality would suit us very well.

I'm not sure he'd be interested though. Only just been sacked and could probably do better than Reading!

First off, I never agreed with re-appointing Brian. Going back has very rarely proved to be a good thing. But as he was appointed they should have given him some time to try and sort out the mess. The way he has been treated by the club is nothing short of disgraceful. Reading Football Club is rapidly turning into all of the things I despise about football and at the moment I am embarrassed to call myself a supporter.
FWIW I think Reading's next manager will be either a first timer or a well travelled manager with a track record of failure. Why would a manager of any repute come to a club where he's likely to only last six months? Any fans who think we'll end up with someone whose CV is better than Brian's are going to be disappointed. Until our owners have made a financial killing on the car park development (which I believe is the only reason they bought the club in the first place) the football team is almost certainly going to have to take a back seat.

Anyone who hasn't yet seen Kingsley Royal's application for the job on Twitter will be deluded if they choose anyone else in this thread.

It's the best job application I've seen for a manager's job in my entire football-related life.

(Including the spunking cock.)

Given this job is absolute poison at the moment, it HAS to go to somebody relatively young with nothing to lose and everything to prove. Might as well be Stam to be honest.

Former Blackburn Rovers manager Paul Lambert has admitted that he would like to take charge of a new club sooner rather than later.

The Scot decided to leave Ewood Park last month after a disappointing season that saw Rovers finish 15th in the Championship, but now he believes that it will 'not be hard at all' to find a new role.

"I'll wait and see. I want to get into it again. I don't find it hard at all to get another job," Lambert told BBC Sport. "It's quite seamless for myself. I can only speak for myself, but I find it no bother at all. There are already one or two things I've looked at."

"I've worked at some great clubs, but you move on and try to find somewhere else to start a project. I don't have any issues of going into a dressing room or taking a club on.

"I'm lucky that I can pick up the phone and have a look at things abroad. It depends when someone wants me. They've got to pick up the phone. I want to get into management again."

Is this a more intelligent version of Brian? Because I'd be in for that.
