John Smith And what an absolute roaring success their club is!!

Next season will be there 7th consecutive season in the premier league.

By modern standards I'd say that's pretty successful.

If only we were as shit as West Brom.

We thrashed them last season. They're toilet and going one way next season

Of course it works

If you think managers still sign players you need to get back to the future, Marty

Sadly the benchmark isn't set very high.

I think where it works best is when the manager is in regular conversation with those who scout/sign new players and they agree on what is required.

Having said that, If I was a player and a club came in for me I would want a sit down chat with the manager to find out what his plans were for me and if he actually wanted me rather than risk finding myself signed for a club with a manager that refused to pick me and/or saw me as 4th choice.

The exception may be youngsters who are being signed for the future, most likely for the next manager.

We have absolutely no idea about with players are Manager/Owners led, so it's probably not worth speculating. The only reason we know about Rakkels is because Peterborough's bellend of a chairman felt the need to tell the world.

Truth is, this is just being used as another stick to beat the owners with. There's probably plenty of 'owners' signings both at Reading and in wider football that have worked really well, but that doesn't sit within the fan's vendetta against our owners.

No smoke without fire.

It works at a higher level as the two big Spanish clubs would testify. At Reading's level with owners who have neither the money or the footballing knowledge to get the right players in then it is far less likely to work.

+1000, some owners need to step back and let others do their job ..

The owners aren't making any signings.
The people identifying players for the owners have plenty of knowledge, it's not a bunch of tuna fisherman randomly buying obscure players !
You can argue about their success rate but then Emerse Fae, Marcus Wliiams, Greg Halford, Elroy Kromheer, Peter Mate etc etc etc hardly suggest 'proper' football people are much better !

A guy who sold Man City to Sheik Mansour and a Dutch under 14's coach do not have the knowledge required.

Agreed

Although it ranks with saying Kingsley and Ken from Security didn't have the knowledge required when SJM ran the club

Considering Ajax U14s would probably beat us I'd say it could work out.

You beat me to it! It is plainly obvious who actually signs players - the people who put up the money. They often (usually) consult the manager / coach in the process but it is their money and they do the deals. Simple really.

Which is why they employ someone who does have that knowledge!

Some people on here have been saying that Brentford are above us (they were on the pitch last season anyway). Following the loss of Warburton due to a difference of approach they've moved onto the moneyball approach, with Bentham overseeing who is signed and the manager being a head coach.

It worked well in Midtjylland, although you can't really compare leagues.

No they don't. They employ a under14's coach, who has no experience of English football.

Their other advisor is a man whose only experience in football is helping sell Man City.
