Ian Royal Name an inexperienced manager to do well here, who hadn't been coaching / playing here for at least the preceding year first.

Pretty inexperienced? He was still a player with no management experience when he took over.

To be fair though, football and RFC are very different now than 25 years ago and expectations even more so.

Ian Royal ...I just don't see why on earth anyone with a brain would want him over the previous incumbent - McDermott.

I don't necessarily agree, but if they don't think McDermott has shown he's capable of recreating the successful environment and team now that he did the first time around (which I could understand the train of thought) then why would they stick with him when they've spotted a young and hungry manager who they think could work better under the blueprint.

Because you shouldn't be able to reach that conclusion in such a short space of time without some truly terrible performance. And it really wasn't that bad.

As far as I'm concerned, once you've given someone the job, you stick by them for at least a year, preferably 18 months, unless there's a clear and present danger of probable and imminent relegation. Any new manager is a gamble to a greater or lesser extent. Same with new players. Which means every time you sack someone doing ok, or not particularly well, you run the significant risk of getting someone worse and having to roll the dice again shortly, or stick at worse.

Now if we talk a slightly different scenario and both Stam and McDermott are going for the same job at a different club right now... then I could see it being pretty even between them. I just don't think there's anything to suggest we should be confident he'll do better.

Now you may disagree with that. That's fine, just expressing my view.

Charles Watts tweeting that he's heard nothing (although he is on holiday) and reckons this is just agent talk with plenty more miles left to run yet.
