I hope you're right , Dave, and he does stick around, but the the last 3 managers (not including caretakers) have lasted 21 months, 12 months and 6 months. In fact, if you look at just from when the Thais took over, Adkins only lasted 6 months. So, the omens aren't good that he'll be here long. Of course the common theme running through the last 3 managers is under-achieving (as our owners see it) but with the reported transfer budget looking pretty meagre then Jaap has his work cut out to break that trend.

If, against the odds, he does have us playing well and we're up in the top 4 around Xmas, then he'll be poached by one of the first premiership clubs to get rid of their managers.

And appoint McD as chief scout.
Knows every player in the lower three divisions.
Won't happen though.

First answer in the conference to the question of "Why Reading?", "As a player I started at a small club".

Inspiring words .

Dodge? Is that really you?

You've gone down hill if it is. I didn't think that was possible.

Good luck to him, he will need plenty of it at this mess of a club.

Personally, I don't want him here and will not support him fully until he proves he's got something about him other than his name as a player. Despite that I won't be calling for his head either, unless we're really struggling in the relegation zone.

The owners have appointed him and now he has to perform because the pressure is not only on him it's on them, in a major way.

So is the new kit he is holding or was it last years?

He'll probably be out of a job by the time the new kit is released.

Charlie Hurley - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion
Ian Branfoot - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion as champions
Mark McGhee - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion as champions
Alan Pardew - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion
Brian McDermott - RFC his 1st (senior) managerial post - wins promotion as champions

Terry Bullivant - RFC his 1st managerial post - gets relegated

All things considered, we don't do too badly giving untried ex-players their first managerial job.

I for one welcome Jaap Stam with his extensive knowledge of the Championship and long history of managerial success.

Hope he finds Shinfield lovely at this time of year.

Thank you Strap for a well informed post. Gives pause for thought amid all the usual nonsense.

I think he will do a decent job here. A lot better than who we could have ended up with, names like Parky returning, did not fill me with confidence.

Some people don't like it but the Championship is evolving and you only have to look at Dyche, Karanka, Bruce from the promoted clubs and the likes of Benitez and di matteo to realise that managers must have the full respect of the entire playing squad and football club; which was blatantly missing with BMcD. In some points it came across as Brian treated players like his buddies. I'm hoping for a more ruthless approach, showing less loyalty to underperforming players and won't be afraid to change things.

Stam is a well renowned figure in world football, in the early stages of his career managerial career. He'll hopefully bring a fresh impetus and open up networks with new player acquisition, simply just because it's him. Some of our fans don't really grasp that all managers must start somewhere; and even on a small budget, players might well want to jump ship for a chance to play for the bloke.

Welcome Mr Stam. You've got my full support until proven otherwise.

Didn't Bullivant manage Barnet before us? And he didn't technically get us relegated.
