That's an understatement. Managing an u21 side that finished 9th last season.

True, he started coaching at Zwolle about 4 or 5 years back. And prior to that was scouting from 2007 for Man Utd.
Was it really worth picking out those 8 or 9 words from my entire post

strap Charlie Hurley - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion
Ian Branfoot - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion as champions
Mark McGhee - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion as champions
Alan Pardew - RFC his 1st managerial post - wins promotion
Brian McDermott - RFC his 1st (senior) managerial post - wins promotion as champions
Terry Bullivant - RFC his 1st managerial post - gets relegated
All things considered, we don't do too badly giving untried ex-players their first managerial job.

royalp-we I think he will do a decent job here. A lot better than who we could have ended up with, names like Parky returning, did not fill me with confidence.
Some people don't like it but the Championship is evolving and you only have to look at Dyche, Karanka, Bruce from the promoted clubs and the likes of Benitez and di matteo to realise that managers must have the full respect of the entire playing squad and football club; which was blatantly missing with BMcD. In some points it came across as Brian treated players like his buddies. I'm hoping for a more ruthless approach, showing less loyalty to underperforming players and won't be afraid to change things.
Stam is a well renowned figure in world football, in the early stages of his career managerial career. He'll hopefully bring a fresh impetus and open up networks with new player acquisition, simply just because it's him. Some of our fans don't really grasp that all managers must start somewhere; and even on a small budget, players might well want to jump ship for a chance to play for the bloke.
Welcome Mr Stam. You've got my full support until proven otherwise.

Sutekh Getting a load of whining supporters on BBC Berks saying it's a crap appointment as he has no experience. So just like Mark McGhee, Brian McDermott and Alan Pardew then
FFS shut up and get behind the him, it has as much chance of working as hiring anyone else.

All except McGhee had a knowledge of the league they were in and the club. McDermott had been scouting the league for years and Pardew had a working knowledge of the club.

Granted but Jaap Stam will have as much knowledge of the Championship as MM had of Division 3 (in fact he'll probably have more given the exposure of Championship games on the TV around the world) plus he is surrounded by experienced members of the coaching and scouting teams who do know all about the Championship in detail so I hardly think it's too much of a handicap. Lastly what value is there in having a working knowledge of the club seeing all the upheaval that has happened in the last 6 months. Doubt there's anyone who has a working knowledge yet
It will all come down to how much he is willing to listen and not just pile in with a "billy big b****x knows best" attitude.
He's achieved virtually everything in the modern game as player so presumably he's been willing to listen and work hard to make himself the best he could be as a player so I have no doubt it will be the same as he steps out as a manager.
Lastly he will make mistakes (just like our owners have been making) as he learns the new trade but there's no reason he shouldn't be able to ultimately succeed.
I'm now looking forward to perhaps a more comfortable mid table season next time around and playing standards improving.

McGhee came with Sir Alex Ferguson's endorsement as well. Fergie saw good leadership/managerial qualities in Mark McGhee and recommended him to Sir John.
Who has endorsed Jaap Stam in that way? Anyway, now that he has been appointed, I will support him and hope he does well.
Neil Warnock has just commented about his appointment on TalkSport and he is a bit sceptical. He says the Championship isn't the best environment to be learning about management in.
This is a ruthless division. The Thai's will bare the brunt of the criticism if this goes wrong.
