As if Gylfi, Brynjar & Ivar weren't enough
"In a friendly against Estonia on 24 April 1996 in Tallinn, Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen entered as a substitute for his father Arnór. This marked the first time that a father and son played in the same international match."

Iceland just gets better.

Lovely hatchet job on Woy by Linekar, Shearer, Rio and Jenas. Made Wrighty earlier on ITV, seem possibly sanguine.

Winston Smith Welsh team watching England get knocked out

https://mobile.twitter.com/UItraSuristic/status/747580571455348736/video/1

That video says more about the Welsh team than it does the England team.

That's saying a lot as England were woeful.

I think it's pathetic and sad that another home nation takes such delight and celebrated wildly seeing England lose.

Ian Royal Kane, Sturridge and Rooney all absolutely atrocious. The entire midfield wanted three touches when they should be taking two. Almost no one moved for the ball ever. Absolutely disgusting. And there is no one to blame for that but the players. Hodgson certainly could have done a better job, but there is no excuse for the total lack of quality anywhere on the pitch from all those multi-millionaires who play so much better week in week out through a season in the PL.

Man of the Match? There's 14 players contributing for worst man of the match.

While some of the blame must go to the players, Hodgson was without doubt the prime source of this complete embarrassment.

Had absolutely no gameplan or system and that showed in his ridiculous squad selection. Once there he still couldn't pick a decent side from the reasonably talented players he did have and appears to give no leadership or instill any belief in the squad.

While players can be blamed for their utterly gutless and leaderless performance on the pitch one only has to look at the example they were being set by their manager to realise why.

His departure is the only good thing to come out of this tournament for England. He should have gone after the farce he oversaw in Brazil but the FA know best of course

Looking forward to Southgate already

Sutekh THAT WAS COMPLETELY EMBARRASSING YOU USELESS BUNCH OF OVERPAID IDIOTS

It wasn't embarrassing, it was a fully forseeable and expected result from England playing in a tournament.

England's recent record in tournaments:

2016 - Lost in first knock out round
2014 - Out at group stage
2012 - Lost in first knock out round
2010 - Lost in first knock out round
2008 - Failed to Qualify
2006 - QFs (won first knock out round)
2004 - Lost in first knock out round
2002 - QFs (won first knock out game)
2000 - Out at group stage
1998 - Lost in first knock round
1996 - SF
1994 - Failed to qualify
1992 - Out at group stage

So after the 1990 WC run, England have played in 13 tournaments - they have made the knock out stages 8 times and lost the first knock out game 5 times. (some were of course QFs and some 2nd rounds based on competition structure).

In the other 3, they won the tie but lost the subsequent tie.

So this was a par England performance. The only difference is that it was a 2nd round tie due to the extra teams.

Diagree there Stranded. It was embarrassing. Result aside - England players lost the ability to do the basics in that game last night. They couldn't kick the ball, they couldn't control the ball, the movement was non-existent. It's not getting beat that's embarrassing, it's how we were beaten.

Fair enough - I simply can't find a football performance/result embarrassing anymore is probably a fairer assessment - maybe 20 years ago but now - meh - they were rubbish, we lost, I went to bed.

Very bad last night, but not as bad as the last World Cup. At least we managed a few passes and we have a young team that might get better.

But look at the opposition we faced in this tournament. Russia, Wales, Slovakia, and Iceland, and we're out of the tournament.

Most of the other tournaments we have faced and/or gone out to much higher ranked sides.

This is the most embarrassing.

All fair points I thought. Slight whiff of player's union about it but they were right to say that we were tactically clueless. No identity, no idea what is his best team or how to use the players at his disposal.

Lots of people saying that our players aren't good enough - in certain areas maybe, but I don't buy that. We had the two top scorers in the Premier League playing for us and they looked completely ineffective, there seemed to be no plan on how to use them.

Well we qualified from the group, so the opponents there are not that important. Iceland were simply better coached, better prepared, fitter and stuck to their game plan. Iceland may be a very small country but they are a decent team who have belief in what they are trying to do - that is clear.

England appeared to have no plan, played like a bunch of individuals who proceeded to make individual mistakes i.e. falling asleep for the long throw just after scoring and not saving a shot that was almost directly at the keeper. England is a larger country that says it has belief.

Yeah. The fact Iceland came better prepared and better coached than England is embarrassing.

The group games are important considering we should've easily topped the group, and would've landed on the easier side of the draw. Although, that's slightly less credible point now considering our exit to Iceland... but anyway, the performances in the group were not good enough.
