So Stam confirmed today he still wants a CB (Moore) and a ST. No mention of a replacement for Norwood who forced a move to Brighton.

I'd agree we need full backs but maybe that's a job for next summer. We can't replace everyone in one go.

Personally I think we'll see how we go till deadline day re the midfield and address adding to it then once we've seen how they perform.

I think Evans will be great this season. A proper box to box player.

Only McCleary and WIlliams are left on Zingarevich wages now I think after Gunter accepted a lower paid contract in January or whenever he signed it

Players whos contracts expire in 2017 according to transfermarkt:
Al Habsi
Cooper
Long (although I thought he signed a contract in the Summer)
Williams
Stacey
Fosu
McCleary
Tanner
Kermit

Who do you think we need to keep?

Keep Cooper, Stacey, Fosu, Tanner.

Al Habsi is an OK? goalkeeper so I don't really mind keeping him on another year as long as we have a better number one by then. McCleary is a good player on his day but those days are rarer than ever and he's awfully injury prone, has to have a good season. Williams will never take the pay-cut we need him to and will probably be gone before next summer. Jury's out on Kermogant, haven't been impressed by him at all but he's got a full season to show his worth under Stam, especially given our current lack of striking options.

I'll go ballistic if we don't renew the contracts of Stacey, Fosu and Tanner

Priority has to be a centre back ( and lets hope we have Moore by this time next week )

After that i would say the priority is a full back. Brilliant if there was someone out there who could do a good job at either left or right back but presuming there isnt i'd say a left back is the first choice and we look at the right back area in January

Next priority is probably a younger Kermorgant or Jimmy Quinn type of striker. Someone with a bit of presence and aerial threat to worry defenders and who knows where the goal is.

Not actually sure if we need to replace Norwood, certainly not like for like, perhaps a decent DM as cover would be useful given Berg's likely propensity to keep disciplinary committee's entertained.

So that is what I'd be looking for before the window closes.... Another 3 signings certainly and a 4th if theres a good deal to be had.

Can't disagree with a word of that. Liam Moore is someone we need to sign, he has all the attributes we need. I also can't believe Mariappa still has no club. Left back needs to be looked at because only Obita and maybe Jules can play there. We'll need to assess the right back situation to see if Watson is capable back up. We need a striker who is strong, fast, and can finish.

Mariappa is a puzzle. Not him coming back, there's any number of reasons not to return, but he's quite versatile in his ability to play RB and CB fairly equally well would make you think he'd have been snapped up. Supposedly linked with Rangers and Leeds (but isn't everyone linked with Leeds).

I think through midfield and attack the rebuild has gone well. My worry as we approach today's kick off is the lack of rebuild in defence; on paper nothing has changed since last season really.

With a little extra now in the kitty I would absolutely love Stam to go out and get both Marriappa and Moore.

With McShane, Marriappa, Moore, Gunter & Obita in our defence; you could argue it would be one of the best defences (on paper) in the division. IMO those two additions would set us up far stronger for the season to come.

We really should stop pretending people playing out of position is a good option. It should be a last resort, not a first resort.

So Ian is against there being options ?
If a player is comfortable playing in several positions then why not use him as a utility player ? I wouldn't suggest using Rakells as a full back , that really would be a last resort. But Quinn can play there, it's an option rather than a solution but it's stupid to say utility players should not be used in a variety of positions if required.

I have no problem with utility players used sparingly. Quinn did ok at full back when tried there I wouldn't say much more than that. But we've been putting square pegs in round holes and relying on too many players who are ok in several positions and good in none for way too long.
