by TBM » 09 Sep 2016 22:23

The reason we played like that in the second half is because Mick McCarthy is an experienced manager and he got his players to push higher up the pitch and pressure our Centre Backs and Keeper.

I liked it when everyone cheered Al Habsi lumping the ball up there, then it immediately came back to us and put us under pressure. Have some patience ffs.

But the negativity from parts of the crowd clearly affected the players as well.
It's a big problem for us if the fans are so blind that they cannot see what the team is trying to work towards, or realise that booing is entirely counterproductive.

Yep, players were extremely comfortable playing it around until the booing then they started looking for the long option. Please stop it!

Keeper to Centre Back 20 times is not passing football, it's negative and puts you under pressure rather than the other team.

Stam seems to believe that we are not "used to playing this way" but we've been playing it ever since Adkins was appointed.

My favourite quote of the night from the ED stand:

"This is clearly the way we're going to play this season so if you don't like it **ck off"

I tipped my cap to him.

I don't agree with the booing but there are certainly flaws with the way we pass out from the back, when Ipswich started pressing us high up the pitch we needed the midfield to drop back and provide an outlet for the defence, hopefully it will come in time as when this style of play is working it looks absolutely great.

I'd go as far as to say that the booing was disrespectful to Jaap, his coaching team and the players. They are fundamentally changing they way this team is playing and they are making good progress. The booing tonight affected the players and anyone who says it didn't either didn't watch or is a clueless idiot.

Sure sometimes the passing goes nowhere and a mistake is made they need encouragemen, not booing.

Yeah for the most part, the turnovers happened when we went longer. Yes we need to show for it a bit better, up the tempo more often and play with a bit more purpose, the difference between this season and previous attempts to play out, is they're actually showing more intent, composure and patience, and as a result we're doing better.

Previously it's used the keeper less and just the centre backs more until we give up and go long. We're actually finding routes out and working it. Really impressed by the way when McShane and Moore were getting closed down they mostly didn't go long, they worked it and either VDB, Evans or Blackett dropped back into space. Need more of that, not less.

Our midfielders were all being very tightly man-marked - so whenever they did drop deep to provide an outlet they couldn't be passed to as they were too tightly marked.

Got to find a way to play around teams who set up like that, as we struggled to pass through the thirds for the whole game, and incidentally most of our possession high up the pitch resulted from free kicks, throw ins and loose balls etc won from long passes.

Fully behind the possession game, I love it, just need to make sure our midfield isn't marked out the game so that we don't have to bypass it when we want to go forwards.

Exactly. Good management from McCarthy but the name callers fail to see that and would prefer to start hurling insults around to anyone who disagrees. Passing football is great, when it's played correctly but when it's played the way we play it then it's nowhere near as effective as it should be.

+1 to everyone against the boos.

Literally what are people trying to get out of booing the team? It's not helping anyone.

The people that are booing are the same people who would get on the teams back if we were playing long ball aswell.

Get behind the team, this new management with a new style of play. There's so much potential for this to work out given time and patience.

The booing in the first half was embarrassing.

But i don't think the booing had anything to do with the poor second half performance. Ipswich nullified us perfectly and pressurised our defence into going long. Worrying, as everyone can look at that and see how easily we can be put off our plan A. And we don't have a plan B as evidenced by the subs
