That sounds very odd as there is absolutely nothing in the ground rules or the instructions given to the stewards that says you cannot take water into the stadium. If you were trying to take a glass bottle or cans of beer in they would stop you, but a plastic bottle of water is fine wherever you bought it.
I suspect you were unlucky and were stopped by an agency steward used to working elsewhere who just got it wrong.
I regularly bring my own drinks into the ground in a plastic bottle and even when a steward has checked my bag they have never even questioned it.

I thought the rule was only caps of drinks bottles. Take off the cap and you're fine.

It's meant to because they are easier to throw and also more of a hazard if you stand on one - it doesn't deflate and can trip you up.

The 'caps off' rule hasn't been enforced in the North stand for ages, either for bottles bought on site or brought in. I asked a serving wench about it and she said they had been told not to worry about it. No idea if they have relaxed it in the rougher stands.

If you don't think we will play a strong team then you're on a mad one.

What was that?
