Who is your favourite RFC broadcaster of all time?

by floyd__streete » 18 Apr 2016 13:31

With Dellor having deeply troubled our sensitive fanbase of late, got me to remniscing about some gr8 names over the airwaves through the years. Personal favourite was Steve 'At Elm Park for Radio 210 with Horseman's coaches, coaching at its best' Beddow, but I really liked the Maughan-fronted Meridian mid-90s glory days coverage as well. John 'And the referee has blown his watch' Southall was an excellent commentator who went onto better things with the BBC.

My favourite isn't listed. Brian Roach covered games at Elm Park back in the pre BBCRB days when Radio Oxford covered the Reading area. Great commentator who was also a true RFC fan

I voted for Dellor. Even though he talks a lot of nonsense, he does a good job. If he takes on board our criticisms then he can become an even better voice of Reading FC.

I would like him to be more intelligent in his analysis and less short-term and knee jerk. If he can add a bit of balance, understanding and fairness then that would be great.

It's a +1 for Hufford here too, used to enjoy listening to him.

TBF Dellor isn't too bad, just gets a bit carried away with his opinions at times (the Vydra case in point), but by and large does a decent job from my somewhat detached viewpoint.

Chris Maughan for me.

The very mention of his name makes me think of end of season videos after we got promoted.

You missed out Brian Moore off 'The Big Match'.

People will vote Hufford because he's the only alternative to Dellor that most of RFC's 05/06 bandwagon fans will remember.

Mark Gonella.

But only because his surname reminded me of a sexually transmitted disease.

Did like old Steve Beddow too - fat bugger in a helicopter is all I see when I hear his name.

Very soft spot for Maugham - he reported us well.

Andy Steggles reminded me of a toothsome fire alarm salesman, for some reason.

Quite like Dellor - although he also succumbs a bit to modern day hysteria - a bit like Claire Balding who began life as a quite 'quiet' reporter but has gradually turned into an awful, shouting, crooning, over-emotional, sycophantic ('If it pleases your majesty'  at Royal Ascot - WTF?) arsehole-like media 'personality', so watch it Tim, just rein it in a bit so that you don't go the same way, yeah?

Anyway, I've gone right off topic.

Fav: Gonella.

It's all about David Bobin, certainly until fairly recently still spotted occasionally on Sky Sports News.

Jonny Saunders. He was Tim Dellor's predecessor. He was a Brighton fan, but a very good broadcaster. Back in the late 70s, Ralph Dellor often covered Reading for BBC Radio Oxford and was excellent.

Even though I've been quite critical of Dellor, I do actually like him. He does a good job. But if he can harshly criticise our players then I can harshly criticise him. His criticisms of some of our players are often unbalanced and very unfair and by doing that he leaves himself wide open to receive criticism himself.

But overall, especially when you consider RFC coverage of the past. Dellor is fantastic.

I would just like Dellor to be a bit more mature and intelligent than the average fan and not encourage knee-jerk, short-term nonsense which is not in the best interests of the club and the goals of going up. Of course analyse and be critical, but also be realistic and understanding. Don't set ludicrous expectations that cannot be fulfilled by Coppell, Mourinho or Sir Alex let alone our very own Brian McDermott who is a great manager for Reading FC and we are lucky to have him.

Hufford was Dellor's predecessor.

Southall covered us briefly when the local station was Thames Valley FM, when the stations reverted to *xf*rd and Berks Southall went off to watch that lot up the road sink into non league oblivion.

Believe "The Huff" was actually the primary reporter for Reading from the move to the Mad Stad onwards.

Off track and for the record, seem to recall that Wycombe Wanderers were also covered by Thames Valley FM until about 1998/99.

Oof, forgot about Hufford :!:

Indeed, Saunders was Adie Williams' predecessor.

So who is the guy (Michael?) on Chris Evans' Breakfast Show today, sitting in for Vassos Alexander in the sports chair, who said he was on BBCRB in the Coppell days (even mentioned the 106 points record and just missing out on Europe)?
