Did anyone else notice Joey having a go at Gunter a number of times in the first half for not being in the right position or tracking runners? He wasn't happy. Blackett also gave out a cry of exasperation for Beerens not tracking back and helping him out when he had three men to mark

sandman Stam is the limitation, not the players. This team need to let off the leash, they're good but they could be so much better if he let them mix his rigid style up and express themselves more.

Yeah, Stam is the limitation, it's obvious.

It's not like Stam is getting better success from the players who were here under previous managers, or has brought in many players to contribute to a good run. It's not like he's already halfway to equaling our most home league wins in five seasons with just 8 out of 24 home games gone. It's not like he's currently got a win rate on a par, if not better than, McDermott or Coppell. It's not like we're in 5th having been consistently in the top 10 after finished 17th and 19th in the preceding two seasons, with Stam in charge for just six months.

Of course, Stam is holding us back.

2 factors have got us to 5th and it aint Stam. Its Al Habsi and Yanns defensive qualities. i agree about the Team to be left off the leash as
it is painfully obvious that some of the players are not comfortable with the rigid way we play and flair play is not the order of the day. we will probably end up in the playoffs as we will bore the hell out of the oppostion as we have done with SKY not being interested in showing our games. Sure we will be sucessful but at what cost. no fans watching ( near the bottem of average attendances)
any of our games live.

What happened to the days when strikers were strikers, midfielders were midfielders and defenders defended. When did it become the "NORM" to be jack of all trades and a master of none?

Did Gary Lineker Defend?
Stan Bowles support the defenders?
Did T. Henry track back?
Did La Tissier do any of the above

Nonsense. Win games, especially at home, and people will come. I find it extremely doubtful our attendences so far are significantly down on the last couple of years. Feel free to provide some evidence they are.

I very much doubt attendances under Jaap will be anywhere near as low as they dropped during the turgid and completely ineffective hoofball that we 'enjoyed' for most of last season.

It's not that Stam is a "limitation" as such, clearly he's getting us results and fair play. I just think we could be even better if we had a little bit of flexibility and urgency in the final third. You can do that and still keep the ball.

To claim Stam is not a factor in us being in 5th is just stupid.
To claim he is less if a factor than Yann's defensive work is also daft.
I agree that we are very much a work in progress, and that if we add a couple of players in January we will play differently but Jaap has been pretty sensible in his approach. He's trying to make us hard to beat, to have a reliable style we can play almost in our sleep before we go on and add the flair and attacking side.
Of course other managers might approach it differently but Jaap is learning his trade and had a major overhaul to carry out.
To get us to 5th, to get us winning away again are significant achievements. We''be shown real character along the way and it's wrong to say we've played a rigid system all the time.
We need to see continued progress but this criticism smacks of the comments aimed at Brian when we last won the league.
Let's hope Stam is as bad amanager as Brian was in that first spell !

Stam has done an outstanding job. I'm sure he like everyone else realises there are still a number of improvements that can be made though.

I think we've the makings of a play-off team, especially if we can find another striker/or get Yann or Samuel firing consistently. The likes of Evans and Swift should only get better, and we've got some depth with players such as Quinn, Obita and Kelly on the bench. If we did get to the play offs after last season's shambles, it would be quite some achievement

Hopefully Meite can get a bit of a run, as I do like the sound of him and the small clips I've seen of him play

Actually, at that point we had started our decline, our peak of 2nd was after the 1-0 win over Charlton on October 17th.

Thing is, this we're slow, ponderous, overpassing, no penetration, no creativity, no goals, need a striker.

We're getting results.

Are our expectations higher than the quality of the league - like, are we basing our expectations upon a benchmark of Coppell's team when we finished 8th in the league?

Totally agree with IR. I'm hoping Stam sticks to his rigid tactics and we nick something up at the JJB next week.

Making us hard to beat was top of our list when Stam came in. Stam has done that so far. The players could go fluent if they chose to; Stam does not kick every ball. The players obviously agree & know what is being asked of them.

All the flash attacking style can be seen down at saints and swansea. In time you never know, we could see some at the mad Stad too. We couldn't keep the ball or do anything with it last season.

But for the time being I can put up with some sensible stuff, chalking up some points until business opens up again in Jan. Rome wasn't built in a day. Even if it isn't pretty, winning football matches sure beats being dragged to shopping on a Saturday.

how is it rigid

weve got CBs running with the ball and playing out from the back, weve got midfielders dropping into the defensive line, weve got full backs, turning into wing backs, weve got midfielders playing as a 10, weve got wingers swapping sides and supporting the front man.

rigid. my arse.

Quite enjoyed the game TBH. The car-park afterwards, however, was an absolute shambles. Presumably RBC forgot to flick the football-match-traffic-light switch on the A33 roundabout.
