The predecessors to Ray and Patience ( not to forget Daaavid) were a couple of as you put it "fudge nudge rs" Steve and ? who were looked after by a lovely lady called Rose. They were the first landlords after the revamp and really did a great job getting the pub back on the map.

It was my local for a good few years, my desk was in what is now O'Neills so not too far to go for a lunchtime or after work reviver.
Went downhill rapidly after the Jock couple to over from Ray and Pay.

First recognition of Ray and Pay on hna.......great brummies.....went to their sons wedding ( after they had absconded to The Swan Arborfield)

Ran a great house there too......whatever happened to them?

(Can remember the two rooms of the Blags....the pool room being stuck out of the back somewhere before Ray & Pay))

At the risk of taking this thread totally off topic I was at David's wedding too and spent many a good time at the Swan. If you could get over the accent probably the best landlords in the area.

Noticed that the Reading Railway Club (in between the Three Guineas and Greyfriar) has a poster outside welcoming RFC and LI fans. No idea how busy they get and what their policy on away fans is.

The Gateway and Greyfriar are away fan friendly I believe. Turn right out of the station and head down the hill. You can't miss either. The Gateway does better beer though.

You must be joking....

No. Any decent pub does a good selection of generic beers plus a few real ales for the ale types. Catering for everyone if you will. The Greyfriar, and believe me, I've been in about a dozen times now, not once have I had a beer that tasted good. "Oh you like Guinness do you?" "Try our Vanilla Stout, you'll love it". It was categorically one of the worst stouts I've ever had. It was like a pint of Guinness, left for 5 years, with a hint of drip trays from off beer added to it.

Don't go in there then, good beer is clearly wasted on you.
