Tony Le Mesmer First visit to Larges Lane. The new pitch is obviously in good order and work is still going on. But a very cramped location and parking seems to be a problem with bigger crowds than before. But that will teach me for turning up at 2.59 ! Overall, didn't really do it for me as a venue i'm afraid.

Bracknell's crowds since returning having so far averaged 270, which is quite something for a club that had about 15 years of regarding any crowd in three figures as a cause for celebration.

I'll probably wait until they've finished before going along, although it does seem disappointing that the plan is to leave three sides flat and uncovered.

Bracknell's form is even better than I thought, according to the club official site, where the front page boasts that they've won 11 of their last 10 league games.

It's on par with a recent main page headline for a game of "You had to be there to believe it", quoting the final score as Bracknell Town 5 Bracknell Town 2.

...spot on HB: 15 League (11) and Cup (4) wins since a 2-1 defeat in the League at Tuffley on 5th November.

... and in other news prolific ex-Winchester marksman Warren Bentley has been snapped up by Bobby Wilkinson's Hungerford from his current club Gosport Borough - who, rumours abound, are in deep 'shtuck'?
Warren managed 113 goals in 2 seasons for City. I suspect they were rather hoping that Gosport's travails might see him return to the Denplan.

He might go into their match squad for tonight - can't pick up any confirmation from twitter -

- BUT the game at Bulpit La vs Whithawk passed PM inspection and is ON this evening 19:45 KO - think I'll stay in the warm though! :mrgreen:

UPDATE from Crusaders Tweets - Bentley came on around the hour mark and is having some impact - Hungerford led 2-0 but Hawks have pulled one back through much travelled front man Kevin Lisbie - even played a couple of games for us on loan back in the very late 90s.
Sounds as if Hungerford are hanging on a bit......... and lo! .... Warren has just (probably) put the game to bed with his first goal for the club now 3-1 on 88' 8)

... lots of injury time due to long delay IN injury time - Scott Rees shoulder - maybe broken or dislocated. Full Time now - 3-1. :)
Hungerford up to 7th; a point off a PO place.

I believe we let him know he'd be welcome back when Gosport went wrong for him, but it was never likely to happen, and I don't think anyone at Winch was seriously thinking he would return. There may have been a cheeky "come and play for us to stay match fit while you find somewhere else" type approach, but even that might have upset what is currently a settled and in form squad.

Pleased he's sorted a club out. Quality striker at non-league level.

...and they promptly lose the next one :roll: .... last night A v Ardley Utd in the Floodlit Cup - so hardly high priority - nevertheless appeared to be strong Robins line-up. No detailed report yet on their site yet but brief preview of a forthcoming article says Ardley's win was 'well-deserved'.

Got some tough games coming up over the next month:
- home and away league games against Ardley - games vs Flackwell (H) and Binfield (A) on a Monday night, as well a trip to Highworth.

.... hardly any other local games survived the frost on Tuesday - there were plenty scheduled, a few even started and were Abandoned, including those at Banbury, Hartley Wintney & Camberley.

Only Spelthorne played to a finish in the CCLP winning 3-2 vs Baggy Lea.

Egham's County Cup interest is over losing 0-2 on the artificial surface at Whyteleafe.

I believe the investment has been funded by the sale of some of the land. Might explain why its such a tight squeeze.

Regular visitor to Bulpit Lane over last 5 years, yesterday Hungerfords performance in their 3-0 defeat of East Thurrock was probably the best I had seen. The only criticism I would have was that they should have won by a few more. They look sound defensively, Nat Jarvis and Stefan Brown work tirelessly up front and in Luke Williams they have one of the best midfielders in the division. They are now up to 5th and in the play off places.

:oops: :oops: :roll: :roll: Soz BD ...serves me right for trusting that the Beeb might have updated their NL Tables by midnight that day!! Not sure that the Vanarama did either tbf......

...fairly certain Luke Williams is ex-Binfield and locally may have started even lower down that that (Woodley perhaps?) - was on 'trial' at a league club too I think - Swansea sparks a distant synapse.....

No problem appreciate the work you do on this thread. Think Williams was at Swansea on trial and had a spell at Hayes and Yeading possibly when they were in the conference.

... had a delve about and established I'd actually seen 'young master Luke' :mrgreen: turn out for HandY during their spell at Kingfield (approx 5 yrs back), was MotM in a home defeat to Wrexham.

I think they had no difficulty prising him away from Binfield, with the promise of Conference football, who had indeed previously pinched him from Woodley the year before. Nice to see he's close to a return to that level with Hungerford.

On the subject of Hayes & Yeading - still in enforced exile awaiting resolution of their new ground's safety certificate - they led but lost 1-2 to Kettering at Holloways Pk (Beaconsfield) this PM.

...popped into W.Lahnden this PM for a cut and thrust FA vase tie Southall 4-2 Exmouth @ Hanwell FC (Perivale) .
The home side bucked the trend somewhat and gave their visitors a bit of a run around until late on. Although both clubs are at the same 'step' of the Pyramid, the South West Peninsula League is generally regarded in NL circles, as being far stronger in national competitions than the South Mids One.
Southall demonstrated their passage to the to later rounds is no fluke and they outperformed the much fancied Devon side for the majority of the match. Two late penalties made the score far closer that it should have been but the home fans - in a crowd of about 400+ - joyously celebrated their decisive 4th goal in injury time.

I hope they get a favourable draw in the 1/4s - next round due to be played 18th Feb.

That's a good effort......and a bl00dy long journey.

South Shields pretty much despised at the moment for still being in the competition. 2-4 down at home to Morpeth & down to 10 men, 8 mins left. the floodlights "Fail". Win replayed match 4-0 with sent off player able to play! In my book, that meant the home team were unable to fulfill the fixture. So how they were allowed to replay is beyond me, even worse is the fact that they didn't forfeit the game. Any non league football club with an ounce of dignity would have done so.

Just suppose the floodlights really did fail though, why should they be penalised because the competition rules and/or the FA are obviously asinine?

With a game "abandoned" at that stage and with that score, imo, the correct ruling should have been for both teams to come back and play the remaining 8 minutes unless the game was conceded by either side.

...weren't many games scheduled for this midweek just gone .... and a few of those that were fell foul of the weather again.

Overall a bad spell for our 'local' sides with some heavy league defeats :
Woking 0-3 Tranmere
Brackley 0-3 Stockport
Slough 2-5 @ Kings Lynn
Wantage 0-4 N.Leigh

...there were a few bright spots - Basingstoke won at Banbury with another goal from Nana Owusu, Kidlington also by the only goal at Arlesey.
Andover Town re-scheduled a Wessex League game with Bournemouth (Cherries not Poppies) and ran out 4-1 winners.

In the league & sub-county level cup ties, Henley, Windsor and HandY all progressed, as did Ascot in the hastily re-arranged Reading Invitation Cup tie with Rotherfield.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
..... and here's tomorrow's scheduled NL programme but it's been very wet and I'd expect many to fail inspections; hopefully early enough to prevent wasted journeys for clubs, fans and hoppers alike.
I'll update if I get the chance....
... and we did make it to the remotest wilds of Essex on time for what turned out to be a fairly dull encounter at the top of the Isthmian North:
Brightlingsea Regent 1-0 Maldon & Tiptree.
Ground was a standard, somewhat featureless, 'all grading boxes-ticked' STEP04 ground, tucked away in some back streets close to the town centre. Reminded me very much of my beloved former home club Ramsgate. Tidy enough clubhouse and a few seats in a temporary-looking stand - M25 behaved there and back. Return journey was a bit fraught mostly due to getting lost somewhere between the A133 & A120 N of Clacton.
- then whilst trying to avoid going through the centre of Colchester encountered a road closure on the eastern outskirts - Ol' Bill had set up a diversion which gave us the choice of queuing through the town or driving back out the way we had come in. Looking at the long string of motionless red lights ahead - I chose the latter and quite serendipitously drove past Wivenhoe's ground - stored away in the memory, for whenever they make it back up to the Isthmian. 8)
Eventually found the A120/A12 that skirts round the top of Colchester - which goes past their new ground too and hauled it back home for about 19:45.
I think I've got about another doz. grounds to go in this part of the world too before I can 'complete the League'. :|
Re: The Non - League thread
Just wondering if it's normal this time of year for the Hellenic League to be more or less nothing but various league cup games every weekend (seems to be several different ones for some reason as well rather than just one for the leagues).
Seems to have been like it for the last 3/4 weeks or so. It must drive the clubs mad given league games are much more important to their overall season and I'm sure they'd rather not be playing spot the league game as it is on some fixtures lists.
And even when you do get a Saturday with league fixtures it seems half the clubs aren't playing anywhere so really don't get the Hellenic fixtures "computer" - or is it just a couple of people deciding the league fixtures by drawing random team names out of a hat a few weeks before each game until they get everyone to have played everyone else?
