Drummer quits

by Winchester Royal » 19 May 2017 13:37

Reading Football Club would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Royals supporter and Eamonn Dolan Stand drummer Phil Johnson and his fellow drummers for their fantastic support over many seasons.

Phil and his team of drummers have officially hung up their drumsticks, not missing a beat as they hammered their way out style in the play-off semi-final win over Fulham on Tuesday night.

Phil and his team have been drumming up vocal support at the Madejski for 15 years now but they are hoping to pass the baton on to a new set of drummers ahead of the start of the 2017-18 season.

The Club would like to invite supporters who would like to take up the challenge next season to get in touch if they are interested in becoming the Royals drummer!

Perhaps you are part of a band or maybe you are just passionate about making some noise to spur the Royals on to results at Madejski Stadium in 2017-18.

I agree with something someone on Twitter said:

A drummer isn't necessarily a bad thing. Tons of clubs use it to great effect

But when done badly it kills any semblance of atmosphere.

" You are my ReadBANG BANG BANG

I do think he got better over the years, if they are replaced, hopefully the new team realised its not all about them.

What a way to go out, playing a part in the best MadStad atmosphere in bloody years.

As much as we knock 'em just imagine how quiet it would be without them at all. Never thought I'd say this, but I hope someone else steps up.

Did a decent job at the semi final against Arsenal to be fair.

Would help if they matched what Y25/Y26 were singing though rather than doing something else as if it's some sort of competition.

I don't go to football to listen to people sing (i find it rather odd that grown men stand singing songs tbh) and i don't go to football to listen to drums being banged.

Can't we just go and enjoy a game of football - why the need for anything other than some cheering and clapping?!

That northeast corner makes more noise than many give it credit for and it's largely due to the drummer's efforts.

Sometimes on a freezing Tuesday night with only 12,000 in the stadium none of whom are interested in singing I wish they'd just give it a rest, but they deffinately contribute to the atmosphere most Saturdays.

IT would help if they could actually hear Y25/Y26. Generally not that easy in the ED these days.

Actually thought the drummers were great on Tuesady night and played a big role in getting a lot of the chants going

This. Most of the noise from Y25/26 is angled away from people elsewhere in the East Stand, so can't be heard very well.

The drummer does assist with noise in the North East corner of the stadium. It will be interesting to see what happens in terms of atmosphere in the North East of the stadium.
