Surely the release clause is for if he wants to go but the club doesn't want to let him - and I think it would take either a massive pay-rise, or a total lack of first team football for him to want to go to 'Boro.

So if there is a sale, it will be at whatever price Reading feel is warranted. I guess it depends on whether they think it is worth trying to get some money for him now, given his contract ends this summer. But I can't see Watson being the replacement, given how little first team experience he's had, they would have to buy in. And even if they agreed a sale price, sale won't happen if Gunter can't agree terms with 'Boro

Far more sensible would be to keep Gunter, and gradually piss him off by increasingly starting Watson - which would give Watson more experience, while still having a senior replacement if he is struggling. If the writing is on the wall about first team involvement, the move to another team like Boro might then happen in the January window.

But we'll see. Wouldn't actually surprise me if Gunter is offered another deal - at least if Stam stays.

I like him but he's a bit of a middling player and if we are going 3 at the back next season we need a right back with a bit more of an adventurous streak.

Fair point about the release clause etc - I'd be slightly surprised if he wanted to leave nice southern Reading to go to horrible Middlesboro unless there was a big pay rise in the offing. Esp as both teams will prob be fairly similar standard next year

If I remember correctly it he was out of contract a couple of years ago and was rumoured to have taken a pay cut to stay. As he could have left for free, a low release clause would seem fair enough.

It is easy to imagine that Boro might be willing to offer him much higher wages, given his international pedigree and championship experience, and that Jaap doesn't think he's worth an improved deal...
