Absolutely delighted with this news.

Jaap remains on track to achieve legendary status at our football club. There is still a lot of work to be done but he has made an incredible start to his career as Royals boss. I am really looking forward to this new season and supporting the team to go one better and win the bloody thing this season.

The optimist in me says: Yeah!!!!!!!!!

The pessimist: sacked by Xmas ... as we are hovering around the relegation zone.

Hope the pessimist in me is wrong.

This is the best news for Reading FC in years... he had a few doubters with the slow boring continental style of football being played. But he did this with the team that was already in place and not entirely his, with some new additions and the players getting more and more comfortable with this style of play i expect the same style but only quicker and with a more cutting edge than last season. And lets not forget, we came third with this new style of play.
For now the short term future is looking very rosy indeed....onward and upwards

Best news we could've had this summer, in my opinion.

Thank you, Kes, for bringing it to us first.

Sorry if I'm being thick but is this a 2 year extension or a 2 year deal?

2 years from now, not additional to the remaining one on his last contract

So won't we just be in the same position next summer? Having a manager with 1 year left on his contract that has to be sorted before investing in players...

Better that than a season with a manager whose contract expires at the end of it

Goes without saying. Just a concern that we couldn't have opted for a 3 year deal so we have the solace of knowing whatever happens this season a contract renewal for the manager won't be on the next start of season agenda.

2 year contract suits both parties. Stam has yet to prove himself. The opposition know the style of football we'll play and will be better prepared to upset the game plan.

Great news though for the club as a whole. As Stam will leave a legacy when he finally moves on.

Very surprised, thought he was probz off this summer. Good news I guess, he seems very ambitious so to commit to another 2 years suggests his ambition is mirrored elsewhere in the club.

If he has a good season but doesn't get us up, there's a decent chance he'd go to a club beyond us.
If he has a great season and takes us up, he'll want a contract renegotiation
If he has a disappointing season he'll either move sideways or get the heave-ho, which will cost us more for having given him a three year deal.

I can't really see a situation where a deal taking him to summer 2020 suits anyone very well.

Didn't Coppell only ever sign one year deals, anyway? Not exactly a problem was it.

Nothing to get massively excited about. It just means the club will get more compensation money should he end up at a struggling Premier league club in the Autumn.

Well that's kind of true about any player we might sign as well to an extent

Obviously doesn't mean he will stay for 2 years but it does indicate that a) he is happy with the new owners and b) he is unlikely to go to some other champ club in the near future

That's true. My post was overly negative at what is positive news.
