I see GR is reporting the "story" that Reading is whinging about the cost of players and salaries in today's transfer market.

So it's just like old times with JM running things

winchester_royal The transfer fees shouldn't make too much of an impact as this will just sit on the balance sheet and be amortised over the life of the contact.

E.G. we sign Darlow for £5m on a 5 year contract, we'll be incurring a 'cost' for accounting purposes of only £1m (£5m over 5 years) per year.

It's the wages that are a killer. For any decent player you're looking at £30k a week min. And that's before bonuses, signing on fees, agent fees etc. So let's say that averages out at £40k a week. You're then looking at an annual cost of £2.1m for just one player.

It's crazy money. And just one of these signings could easily push us over the edge of FFP regs.

So we got rid of all those future stars we nurtured plus a few fringe players so we can afford to pay decent wages and buy who?

Look at the clubs these players have gone to mate.

Shrewsbury
Luton
Motherwell
Blackburn
Lincoln
Grimsby
Charlton

Not exactly the moves of 'future stars' eh?

All decent players who will hopefully make it in the game, but not good enough for us now and all getting to the age where they needed to move on.

Just read the GetReading article of our fans overreacting online. Our squad depth is, comparatively, not that bad. We have the following all making apps last season

GK - Jaakola
DR - Gunter, Watson
DC - McShane, Moore, Ilori, Cooper
DL - Obita, Blackett
MC - Quinn, JVDB, Evans, Kelly, Swift
WG - McCleary, Beerens, Popa, Harriott,
ST - Kermorgant, Mendes

And 2 new transfers in thus far (position unknown)

TBD - Clement, Bodvarsson

Thats a squad of 22 players. Last season only 24 players played more that 100 minutes. 3 of them were loans that arrived in January and 2 of them were transfers that arrived in January. That means before the January transfer window only 19 players regularly played.

With both our Strikers injured atm that makes it clear it we will need reinforcement in that area and the GK department is definitely light but Ulderink just said in an interview he expects 4 more players in. One is bound to be a GK and one is bound to be a striker so why is everyone stressing?

Sorry, you mean getting to the age where they should have a fair shout of being in the 1st Team or on the fringe the ones that are getting on
should we be looking at moving them on and also on what basis have you decided they are not good enough. How many clubs are queuing up for our players?

By the names of the people being quoted, it seems to be the resident mongtards from the Facebook group, the sort that think not spending £12m on Scott Hogan is showing a lack of ambition.

Are you suggesting the likes of Keown and Jules are best served by being 5th or 6th choice centre back? Jules rejected a new deal.

Tanner spent 2 years struggling to get starts in League 2, likewise Fosu last season.

This is true, the squad still shapes up well

As you say though, not only are the two strikers injured, but so are McCleary and Harriott.

We obviously do need to get someone in pretty quickly if we want to start the season well. Beerens as a false 9 hardly fills me with optimism

With injuries our squad looks much lighter I accept but I assume our current new signings will fit in a little like this

GK - Jaakola
DR - Gunter
DC - McShane, Moore, Ilori, Cooper
DL - Obita, Blackett
MC - Quinn, JVDB, Evans, Kelly, Swift
WG - Beerens, Popa, Clement
ST - Bodvarsson

And I believe I read in an interview that Mendes is likely to be back for the QPR game (I forgot McShane is suspended) so provided we make the signings our management team is sure we will make there nothing to worry about.

While I agree there is an overreaction, it's not necessarily that we don't have enough players, it's that there are glaring holes in the squad.

We need a 'midfield destroyer'. Whether we play 4-3-3 or 3-5-2, someone needs to do the dirty work and we don't have that man in the squad.

Blackett is not a left back. Ideally we want an improvement on Obita, at worst we need a reliable backup.

We need an out an out striker to score goals.

We need a keeper to replace Al habsi/cover for our Fin.

That's 4 players and I'm not sure we have any of them yet (and I'm aware of the 2 signings we've made!)

I think it is harsh to call them glaring holes.
Evans is perfectly capable at sweeping up in midfield and Kelly proved he can track a player all over the pitch.
The Keeper situation seems close to being dealt with.
And most clubs need an out and out striker to score goals..

NewCorkSeth Ulderink did say he expects 4 more signings

1. Vito Mannone
2. Class act striker
3. Left back cover
4. Good solid performing midfield all rounder

And I would suggest that one needs to be someone who is a bit of a dead ball specialist to give the team some real & consistent threat from free kicks etc.

I'm not that sure we need LB cover. Gunter can move over, Blackett does a (fairly rubbish) job there, hopefully Richards will come through. Quinn as last resort could probably fill in.

Joey is a decent defensive midfielder along with Evans.

The keeper position is now sorted, we obv need to find another forward.

I don't think there are glaring holes as much as lack of squad depth in certain positions. I'd be happy enough to start the season now with Mannone on board and another forward, depending on the situation with Mendes/McCleary and their fitness
