Woodcote Royal No, we are currently one of the worst, if the worst team in the division and that view is supported by recent results and who those results have been against.

tbh, the only poor signing was Aluko. Edwards was maybe a bit unnecessary, and Clement has a lot to prove but is very young and has potential.

At the end of the window Obita was fully fit, so I can see why we didn't get an LB. Maybe a RB, but not sure how long they thought Watson would be out for. And don't think its an easy sell to say come in and spend the season watching Gunter play every single minute from the bench. Otherwise we covered all the positions except striker. Bacuna and Barrow were very good signings, Mannone steady and I like Dadi, just not as #1 striker.

this is utter nonsense.

we needed a proper striker, and a full back (before obita was crocked, not after, because 2 full backs isn't enough fullbacks, due to the risk of injury) instead we bought a load of midfielders for our already overloaded midfield option list and blew more money than weve ever spent before doing so. :| :| :| :| :|

aluko is awful, barrow is decent enough, bacuna is ok, clement is just displacing our youth players from U23 football, Dadi seems a decent chap, but has never ever looked like he could be a main striker anywhere.
if it was a choice between all of them and going all out to get the striker we really needed, there should have been only one option.

you say the only bad signing was aluko....but that's our record signing, pin all our hopes on, last minute desperation buy. that alone is enough to question the summers business

as it happens I think Edwards is exactly the kind of signing we needed if we were going to buy unnecessary midfielders, instead of a load more flaky low quality wide men to play in a narrow formation, but otherwise the summer was an utter shambles. Brian knows it, I know it, & you know it.

And if we’d brought a load of full backs in, then Obita and Gunter has stayed for all season - but Kelly, Swift and Evans got crocked for the season, you’d be asking why we brought in a load of full backs when we needed midfielders

And like I said, who’d you be able to bring in knowing they’d only be cover for imo 2 of the better FBs in the division?

And again on this mythical striker - who did you have in mind? Should we have offered 10,12,15 mill for the people we tried to buy? It still would have by no means guaranteed goals

I’d rather you have tried to answer my q on your thoughts on aluko and why he was signed rather than that rant

again, the idea that you can only have two full backs is daft. most other teams manage it.
I didn't ask for a load, just one.
the way you manage it is either to buy or bring through a younger full back who can step in if required and doesn't mind working to try and displace the incumbents,(to bring one through from within you need to be confident enough in his ability, to actually play him if he's required - if this isn't the case with your own youth option, this needs to be factored into your transfer planning preseason), or buy one who is already good enough to fight them for their places.

im a big fan of both gunter, and obita but to suggest they're streets ahead of anything else we could have possibly got, or so good that no one else would ever come in to try and compete with them is madness. imo

not my job to fully scout w9orld football to find a striker we can afford/will want to come here, but the prerequisites would be: experience of stams formation/style, some sort of goal scoring record at whatever level, fitness, and some form that suggests he is in the right frame of mind to step straight in. personally I think 15 million on oliveira was probably about right, and if we couldn't go that far then we shouldn't have wasted our time, and instead should have done some scouting and brought someone up from lower divisions or abroad for a lot less. its not like we haven't known about the clubs massive striking department shortcomings since STAM arrived, so theres no excuse.

I'd be very interested to know what happened with Aluko and why we brought him in. Was it Stam pushing for him, knowing that it would leave us short of cash for a striker in the Jan window (or was he told different?), or did BT force him on him (very unlikely I'd say).

Either way its been a absolute disaster signing. A poor player on high wages on a long contract, who appears to have stitched us up doing any business in this window

I’d rather you have tried to answer my q on your thoughts on aluko and why he was signed rather than that rant

double d Sorry John but you are being utterly delusional. We are in a relegation battle. We are only 4 points off the bottom 3.

We aren't in a relegation battle.

Hull City are in a relegation battle. They are absolutely terrible, in awful form and have Nigel Adkins as their manager. Add to that Sunderland, Burton and Birmingham and we are laughing our way to safety.

Hull City are in terrible form
Reading are in terrible form *infact there is nobody in worse form.

Hull have Adkins
Reading have Stam

Hull are terrible
Reading are terrible

Yeah we are in a relegation battle. Not beating Bolton, Burton, Birmingham means that we are.

John Smith I take your point on board that we are losing to teams around us and that our form is bad - I'm not in complete denial but what do you think they're posting on the Birmingham forum or the Sunderland forum? Take a look at how bad Hull City are, for example, they are below us in the table with a similarly bad form and have found themselves still in the Cup which won't do them any favours.

I honestly don't think we are in a relegation battle...yet. If we don't win in February then I might start to accept it, but at the moment it's a bad run and we're in lower mid-table.

Sorry John but you are being utterly delusional. We are in a relegation battle. We are only 4 points off the bottom 3.

10th place Watford are only 4 points off the bottom 3 in the premier league.. I agree with John, it's not about how many points away you are it's about the quality of those behind you. It's too early to put us in the "battle" category.

The quality of those behind us seemingly beat (or drew) with us when we played them.

Woodcote Royal Who do you see us beating?

I see us beating Burton tomorrow, Millwall on Saturday and Nottingham Forest on 20th February.

Even if we lose one and draw two of them we will be OK.

Yep, delusional :|

Even if we get two points, that means nothing. If Burton beat us, then we get 2 draws and IF they lose both games that means they gain a point on us. If they win, we draw 2 and then they win another they are level.

Your basis of being safe is ridiculous aswell, by saying we get 2 points in these 3 games you are saying we will be safe? What if we promptly lose every single other game all season? Will we be safe?

You are delusional

I love how you've actually bothered to think of all those eventualities before posting your 'counter-argument'.

The reality is there are three teams below us before we even get to the relegation zone. Those teams aren't going to win many games over the next 6 weeks, it will take a hell of a lot of bad luck for us to drop down there. We have tough games coming up but three certainly winnable ones also (as mentioned in a separate thread; Burton, Millwall, Forest).

Question for you: do you think Sheffield Wednesday consider themselves to be in a relegation battle? Because it's more than likely that we will have swapped places with them come Tuesday 10pm. Let's all step back, stop panicking and look at the bigger picture shall we?

Southampton are 3 points behind Palace. The bottom premier league team beat the 4th. One result isnt an indication of quality its more complicated than that and you know it. If we are fighting for our championship survival then so are at least 8 other teams. From the last 10 games 5 teams are in worse form than us. Yes we are dire and as John said if we get battered in Febuary then we are most certainly ina relegation fight but if we get some results in the next month were fine.

don't know
don't know
don't know

not sure what that brings to the debate though tbf,

problem is, if you spend 15m on Oliveira, as we may have had to do (or 12 on Hugill or whatever) we would have blown our budget on one player. Then if he turned out sh!t or gets injured, then again we'd be asking what the DoF was playing at spunking all our money on one player.

I agree the scouting should have been better. Ollie Watkins was mentioned, and he would have been a good buy. But its not easy finding the right striker. Maybe the scouts thought Bod was the man, along with 19 goal Kermogant? I'm assuming BT isnt doing the scouting.

I think going back to the original point, I don't think the summer business was bad, bar Aluko. We do have cover at FB (Richards, Watson (be interesting to know what was known about his injury in preseason), Blackett and Bacuna if necessary should have been enough. I do also agree that a LB would be a good loan signing now (though we actually have more cover there than RB)

Aluko we can agree on was a massive turd of a signing I think. And for once this isnt revisionism. I think it was heavily agreed on here at the time it was unnecessary and expensive.

Why I asked the Q is that relevant to Stam's whinging. If he is complaining we've blown our money yet asked to get Aluko at whatever price, then I don't think he has much of a leg to stand on. If BT decided the squad needed him, bought him anyway at the expense of having spare cash for a striker this Jan, I agree he should be throughly ashamed of himself, which was your original point.

He has been so far, yep. Do you see any scope for improvement in him or is he a lost cause? I'm a bit torn, really. Sometimes I see a player in there somewhere, but other times I'm less sure. He looks low on confidence, but I was really disappointed in his recent performance against Brentford. At the very least, he is taking a while to settle/adjust and he's been given chances/opportunities.

well yeah, I'm a bit harsh on here because of 2 things - one his lack of positional discipline (could be his error, could be Stam's), and his workrate which I don't think is acceptable.

He has talent - he can beat a man, pick a pass and put in a good cross. Best game that I've seen was against Forest, when he went right up on the full back and stayed there all game. Sounds like he did that against Derby the game after as well.

He isn't a lost cause, but he urgently needs someone to come in and get his head right. He doesn't look like he enjoys his football here, and doesn't look like he is going to fight his way back into form. With the right manager and the right system he could still be an asset.

However he was just simply the wrong buy. We didn't need him and the fee, contract length and no doubt wages would have been much better used elsewhere.
