Fair shout, tbh, Tilehurst. It would appear that some of his traits and skill-set would seem to lend itself to that role. We have a need there, plus we haven't really been able to find his best position thus far anyway (either at FB or CB). So, if it ever worked out, it would solve a couple questions, for us and him. I for one would be ok with giving that a try in pre-season, esp. if we don't sign anyone.

I'm not sure if he has the footballing intelligence to pull it off to be honest. Blackett is a very basic footballer and if things are kept simple he is a perfectly acceptable defender. I am not sure if he would be able to cope with anchoring a midfield/man marking etc. Might be doing him a disservice but Blackett in midfield isn't for me.

id rather him in midfield where his lapses of concentration wouldn't be instantly punished like they are in defence
but I wouldn't fancy him much there either tbf

Blackett has all the physical and technical characteristics to play that role but lacks the mental ability which is arguably the most important. He's seems to lose concentration too much.
