Old Man Andrews I think we lost 4-0 to Swindon Town away from home on this day in 1987.

I remember that game and being caged in alongside their fans.
It was only later that we got the upper tier opposite.
Unless we can maintain the spirit and application shown on Saturday I fear that we will be playing them again next season.
Oh joy.

Worst away day of my life, or any other life for that matter.
easy target practice for the Swindom scum. and lost 4-0 in the bargain, what was there not to like?

The only joy of the day was being at Swindon station, on the platform at the rear of the station, and seeing some Swindon lads giving us loads of abuse through the fence of the car park.

What they couldn't see, and we could, was the police van entering the car park behind them, and slowly advancing towards them. They couldn't work out why we were cheering during their abuse until it was too late.

I was one of the three thousand or so Reading there that day too. It was in the Lou Macari cash in the boots bonus days of Swindon as they went through the divisions with our Jimmy and Steve White banging them in. Hate to admit it but they were a decent team back then.

As for the day, all I remember is lots of fighting outside the ground afterwards and coins going either way over the fences separating us from them during the game. Some bloke on the train back had broken his leg in his efforts after the match.

I’d love to find a copy of that photo without the watermark. It’s a microcosm of that entire season really.

The worst thing is that I literally have no memory of that game or that performance.

Looks pretty good from here!

We really screwed up that season didn't we? Just 26 points from the last 20 games turned what should have been a comfortable promotion into a play off nightmare.

Brilliant goal by a brilliant player. I was oop north in Blackpool that weekend for a stag-do, but took some time out to see Burnley v Bolton at Turf Moor. Remember thinking how good Bolton were. Little did I know...

so, the home leg of the playoffs, we opened up with

Reading:
Hahnemann,
Rosenior, Pearce, Duberry, Harding,
Gunnarsson, Matejovsky, Tabb,
Kebe, Church, Long

my memory is that that was completely out of left field. I've also heard it kicked off in changing room either at HT or FT - Doyle appears to be out there, injured I guess. Kitson on bench, Hunt on bench, Lita around?

In any case

lol

Absolute mess. I remember my Wolves supporting mate being hugely impressed by Reading on the night we won 3-0. He said it was like men v boys. He couldn’t see beyond us winning the League. Yet it was Wolves who went on to win the title.
In the first half of that season we were hammering teams and scoring loads of goals. We then couldn’t score for toffee in the New Year and failed to win home game after home game.
Typically had we beaten a Brum on the final day of the normal League season we would have gone up on goal difference....we had the best goal difference in the division. Yet we blew it again. Then Burnley in the play offs when we were in total control until Bikey lost the plot.
Moderate home form in the second half of the season would have seen us up. It was not to be and the Coppell era came to an end.
We had a few decent youngsters on the books then as well by the names of Sigurdsson, Antonio and McCarthy.

We have fallen back a long way since then.

I remember Kitson being out of favour. He had come back on loan and it just didn’t work out. In the second leg we rarely looked like scoring. Burnley then scored a worldly and it was all over. My lad was five at the time and asked if we were still going to Wembley for the play off final.....
