Euro 2024

by Winston Biscuit » 27 Sep 2018 17:20

Germany gets it

Sounds like Turkeys human rights record scuppered their bid. Turkey have now failed in a bid to host Euro's 2008, 2012, 2016 & 2024

Rather like Russia this summer, I think Euros in Turkey might be good for the place.

+1 and Germany really don’t to be a host of a major Finals yet again.

Funny how the fancy takes the authorities. Argentina got the WC finals in 78, Russia this year, next one in Qatar etc.

By the way, who's got the 2020 finals?

I think that is the one where multiple countries are hosting it?

Yep just checked.... this one could get messy. Logistically I have no idea how this would work. Imagine playing groups in Dublin and then having to go to St Petersburg for your 1/4s.

So..... Group stage and round of 16 is in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bucharest, Budapest, Glasgow, Bilbao.

Baku, Munich, Rome, St Petersburg have groups and 1/4s.

Wembley has Semis and Final.

Group stages are paired

Rome/Baku is probably the worst
Copenhagen/St Petersburg
Amsterdam/Bucherest
London/Glasgow is the most convenient
Dublin/Bilbao
Budapest/Munich

As a one off, I think its a grand idea. Would not want every Euros to be like this.

Wembley has a R16 game as well btw.

UEFA have also said that any hosts that qualify will play at least 2 games at home. So assuming England do qualify they will play twice at Wembley and once in Glasgow (though prob all 3 at home), followed by a likely game in either Copenhagen or Dublin. So not too bad at all from an English point of view.

Would love a game in Copenhagen, been looking for an excuse to go there for a while now.

So if, for example, England and Scotland both qualify, they're automatically in the same group?

tasty.

Yep - UEFA website states:

Every qualified host would be guaranteed two home games in the group phase, but there would be no such guarantee for the knockout stage. Host nations that qualify will be automatically placed in the following groups. If both paired nations qualify, a draw will be held to determine which is at home in their direct encounter.

No other "rivals" have been paired like this, so either they really want it to happen or they have no expectation of Scotland getting anywhere near the thing.

Aye, but with the Nations League repechage thingy, there's a bigger chance than usual.

Yep, would be very surprised if they aren't in the repecharge given there are 12 spots they could take after the first 20 teams have qualified.

Whoopee, another set of also-rans and completely pointless games for England. Even if they cock it up no doubt UEFA will make sure there’s 24+ qualifiers for the actual finals so you’d really have to be incompetent to fail to qualify.

Still, be interesting to see who Ireland, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland will struggle against this time.

Perhaps next time change their name to Qatar or Russia before bidding.
