Worst Reading XI

by WoodleyRoyal » 15 Jan 2019 11:55

Obviously Reading Football club didn't exist before 05/06, so that's when I'm going to start the question from, but to be honest this shocking XI will take some beating! Even going back maybe to the Bullivant/ Burns era.

Courtesy of Brain Traysers in the BBC Radio Berkshire section he named this beauty of an XI from 2015 against Watford (a)

M.Andersen, N.Keown, Z.Knight, J.Cooper, J.Travner, J.Stacey, H.Akpan, D.Guthrie, J.Taylor, S.Cox, A.Yakubu

With a bench of
Dan Lincoln
Sean Long
Ryan Edwards
Jem Karacan
Aaron Kuhl
Nick Blackman
Andrija Novakovich

Can you name a worse XI that we've put out in the last 15/20 years?

I was there for that game. What fixture did we have next that caused us to rest players?

That's a starting 11 that contained an English international, an Irish international, a Welsh international and 2 Nigerian internationals.

Not the worst XI I've ever seen but remember playing Bournemouth away with zero central midfielders available, as such we played 4-4-2 with four wingers in the midfield four and they were completely outplayed that game. Wasn't the worst XI in terms of ability but certainly in structure

That certainly doesn't mean they're any good though!

Not at all. Only 3 of them were current internationals, only 2 of them earned more than 4 caps and only 1 of them had any sort of lasting impact and that was well in the past by 2015.

I suppose what I'm thinking is that under different circumstances, that could have been a half decent side. Travner's the only complete duffer there.

Maybe. You'd have needed a few time machines though. At the time of the game, it was a very shoddy lineup.

Would imagine there are a number of XIs under Bullivant, Branfoot, Porterfield and Burns that would run that close.

This crock of shit from last season against league 2 Stevenage should be up there. No recognised striker sneaking an abysmal 0:0:

Jaakkola
Bacuna Substituted for Gunter
Richards
McShane
Ilori
van den Berg
Evans
Edwards
Kelly
McCleary
Barrow

Christ the careers these lot have had are embarrassing

Anderson- second fiddle Midtjylland
Keown- playing for Patrick Thistle still who are bottom of the Scottish championship
Knight- retired
Cooper- one of the few who’s had a respectable career
Travner- back in Slovenia
Stacey- Luton, another relatively successful one
Akpan- Bradford after two relegations from the championship in two years, could be in league two next year
Guthrie- recently played for a club relegated from the top Indonesian league
Taylor- still at Exeter
Cox- still at Southend
Yakubu- had a respectable career but was way past it

Lincoln- Bognor Regis
Long- Cheltenham
Edwards- Hearts
Karacan- struggling to get into the Millwall team
Kuhl- still a free agent, whatever happened to him
Blackman- at Sporting Gijon, seems to be doing alright there
Novakovich- still with us, but would be surprised if he still was come July.

It’s not the worst players in an 11. It’s the the actual XI that stepped on to the pitch as a team

Ah....I see...Remember some of the games in the 75-76 season...Some horror shows then. Difficult to pick a team and a single performance all those years ago. The last 18 months has been utterly horrible.....so many choices....
