Royal Rother My son’s Sunday League team played a cup Qtr Final yesterday - the opposition are a newly formed team who have been put in Div 3 and beat us 11-1. They are on an entirely different level which is not surprising considering they have 4 players who play for Hayes and Yeading who, as you all know, are walking away with the Boston South Central League, Some 14 points ahead of Bracknell. (Don’t know whether they are 1st teamers tbh but they were plenty good enough to tonk us into next week.)

What? Players at that level don't play Sunday League do they? Who'd have thought it?

FA Vase S-F draw

W/E 16th March

Northwich Victoria v Chertsey

Cray Valley PM v Canterbury City
- note co-hosts Greenwich Borough scheduled to play Horsham that Sat .... but there is some indication that a Vase S-F may trump an Isthmian League game and Greenwich will move their game to the Sunday
2nd Legs W/E 23rd March

..... ensuring there will be a team from Kent in the Final in May

.... Also there is a chance that both Northwich AND AFC Fylde may become the first clubs to have won both NL National competitions - maybe even within hours of one another!

Cray Valley have a certain Kevin Lisbie upfront for them! 42 years old and scoring loads.

Hellenic Floodlit Cup - Windsor 1-4 Binfield

Complete turnaround from Saturday’s game between these 2 when Windsor won 2-0 away. Binfield looked like a different team and played well. Overall a pretty decent game of football to both teams credit (especially considering it’s their 3rd meeting in 2 weeks).

... not sure if the 'Moles' had Idris Kamara available - new signing from Marlow - he'd have tightened things up in Central Defence. Lots of doom 'n gloom around articles in the local (Wokkers) press about Roger considering his future at Binfield. :(

Harrow Borough 1-0 Taunton Town – leaders beaten at 6th placed Borough
Hartley Wintney (SEVEN} 7-0 Staines Town –att 232 - hat-trick for Mitch Parker
- Staines one of the first of the major Pyramid sides to be relegated – don’t keep much of an eye on the midland/northern leagues – but I doubt there’s anyone in the top four steps, with as miserable a record to date. P33 W3 D0 L30 F-A 35-115 Pts 9
- 'The Row' put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three – up to 12th but just 5 points above Dorchester in 20th who are only behind Basingstoke on GD

-
Hendon 1-0 Basingstoke Town

Didcot Town 1-1 Aylesbury – att 180 Diddy held by the lowly ’Moles’ but they are relatively comfortable in 4th place – 5pts ahead of Thame but well behind 3rd placed Corby who were beaten by 2nd places Peterboro Sports in front of 900 plus

Kidlington 0-1 Coleshill Town – att 40 – and in stark contrast to the crowds involving the top three above - there are some very poorly supported clubs in this division. :|
SL1-S
Bideford 1-0 Winchester City City’s winning run (5 in a row) comes to a halt – they are still 2nd in the recent form table (even over 8 games) behind leaders Blackfield who have 22 points from 24. Winch stay in 6th just outside the POs but with 2 games in hand on Evesham in 5th

Fleet Town 1-2 Larkhall Athletic
Highworth Town 1-0 Paulton Rovers - good 'bounceback' win for Worthians after their midweek mauling by Winch.
Melksham Town 1-2 Thatcham Town att 431 – measure of revenge for the humbling at Waterside a month or so back – Kingfishers are ‘hovering’ safely in mid-table just behind their hosts

CCLP
Abbey Rangers 1-0 Banstead Athletic – somewhat unnoticed Abbey are now up to 3rd but still double-figures in points behind 2nd placed Chertsey
– Banstead who went unbeaten in the league a long way into the season (to mid-Nov) but were held back by the high number of draws, have dropped off the pace badly in the New Year - 5 of their 7 defeats have been since Xmas

AFC Hayes 5-4 Sutton Common Rovers – shock defeat for current leaders at a side that had been bottom for quite sometime but have leaped up to 16th with three wins in a row.
Badshot Lea 1-0 Hanworth Villa
CB Hounslow United 3-1 Knaphill welcome win for the current last-placed side – they host Chertsey on Tuesday – might try for that one as they fairly recently moved into a new ground, having lodged at one of the Bedfonts for a spell.

Chertsey Town 4-1 Balham – ‘Curfews’ close to within a point of SCR and have 5 games in hand – that may increase as they have 2 Vase semi-finals to fit in this month (16th & 23rd)
Colliers Wood United 3-3 Redhill
Horley Town 2-2 Raynes Park Vale
Southall 4-3 Camberley Town
Spelthorne Sports
3-1 Guildford City
CCL1
Ash United 2-1 Fleet Spurs
Bedfont & Feltham
5-0 Godalming Town
Cove
1-4 British Airways
FC Deportivo Galicia 1-3 Farnham Town
Sandhurst Town
0-2 Frimley Green
Sheerwater
5-0 Eversley & California
Tooting Bec 3-0 Bagshot

HELLP
Ascot United 1-1 Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Brackley Town Saints 2-3 Wantage Townimportant win for the ‘Freds’ – keeps them in 2nd, 6 pts behind Brimscomb with three games in hand.
– Wantage are at Scours tomorrow night – might try a mad dash back there, having dropped daughter off at her clinic session nr Windsor – be more likely to get there if it wasn’t for that &^%$ing Smart Motorway nonsense back to jn10 keeping everyone down to 50   :x

Brimscombe & Thrupp 2-1 Virginia Water
Fairford Town 2-0 Lydney Town
Flackwell Heath 1-2 Binfield
Holmer Green
2-0 Reading City - not sure why yet but City have been given a walk-over in the next round of the Reading Senior Cup – were due to play Wrightchoice/Unity from the Thames Valley league
Longlevens 1-2 Shrivenham
Tuffley Rovers 1-1 Bishops Cleeve
Windsor 2-1 Ardley United - 83rd minute winner from a certain B.Hayles?
- Windsor host Flackwell on Tuesday
- Ardley travel to Binfield tomorrow night – might divert round there if held up, coming back down the M4 – bit 50/50 which is easier to get to in a hurry

HELL1E
AFC Aldermaston {SIX} 6-1 Wallingford Town
Abingdon Town P-P Thame Rangers -postponed – surface water at Culham Rd ground
Burnham 3-0 Penn & Tylers Green
Woodley United 2-3 Chalvey Sports

WESSP
Alresford Town 2-3 Bournemouth
Andover New Street 1-0 Hamworthy United - impressive win for ANS over 5th placed Hamworthy – they remain bottom but are now only 2 points adrift of Salisbury-based Bemerton. They host 6th placed Portsea-club Baffins on Wednesday

Tadley Calleva 4-1 Lymington Town
- Sholing (I always find myself saying that in a comedy Chinese accent! ) still tear away into the distance at the top - 12 points clear and only 2 points dropped all season (a game I attended last December at Tadley 8) ) – they have no further Vase distractions either, having bowed out last w/e
- They (Sholing) visit Fleet Town at Calthorpe this Tuesday in a Cup competition.

WESS1
Andover Town 0-1 Romsey Town
Petersfield Town 0-3 Newport (IOW)
Ringwood Town 3-2 Alton

...got to the sometime self-styled 'Capital of Essex' - (well they are only in competition with Chelmsford  ) without any alarms and (hopefully) no 'M25 stealth speeding tickets :x )
Saw Isthmian One - North Basildon Utd 0-4 AFC Sudbury - hosts manager immediately parted ways with the club, after this defeat and in truth they were dreadful. This is their first season back up at this level in recent years (had a 10 yr stay in the Isthmian back in the 80's) and they are only relatively safe due to the woeful performances of a couple of clubs below them.
Lots of extra-timber on show among the locals - big flabby arms covered in vast tattoos - and the men were pretty grim too (boom! boom!)
Ground fairly non-descript in an industrial area just south of the A127 nr a KFC drive-thru - under the shadow of the 'Basildon Onion'

FOOTNOTE: ...... and finally - only spotted this later when checking other leagues:
- WESTERN Premier Westbury 0-1 Shortwood Utd - visitors first win of the season - think they may be last remaining STEP06 side to register a win. All the more impressive is that their hosts were sat in 2nd place at start of play!

Four Of Clubs NL Results from this W/E:

Saturday 23rd February

FA Vase Quarter Finals
West Auckland Town 0-2 Chertsey Town - :D great result for the last remaining 'featured' club - put out the surviving 'Geordie Mafia' too - who were also the Bookies pre-round favourites.
- The 'Curfews' have now been installed as current favourites

{Today Sun 24th} Canterbury City 2-1 Biggleswade
3 Willand Rovers 1-3 Cray Valley (PM)
4 Northwich Victoria 3-1 Sholing aet - 1-1 FT - the Wessex club's exit ensures there'll be a new name on the Vase this year.

- So a county (Kent) with somewhat scant representation in previous Finals, now has two Semi-Finalists this year. They’ve actually had one winner in 99-00 (Deal) and a runner-up about 6 years ago (Tunbridge Wells)

New Odds:
Chertsey [11/10] ahead of Northwich [5/2] - with the two Kent clubs seemingly 'making up the numbers' [Cray Valley 7-2 & Canterbury [10/1 outsiders] .
- Semi-Finals are over two legs on successive Saturdays next month (16th & 23rd)
- unless Canterbury and/or Cray Valley get drawn with home ties for the 16th - when both of their 'landlords/co-hosts' respectively - Faversham/Greenwich - are scheduled be at home in the Isthmian League. In that event there's usually some negotiation regarding who plays on the Friday or more likely Sunday

Tony Le Mesmer Went to Canterbury City 2-1 Biggleswade in the Vase 6th Round. Played at Faversham Town. Crowd of 602 must have been split 50/50, 3 coach loads from Bigleswade.

Amazingly all 4 clubs still in started in the 1st Qualifying Round. Thats 8 ties to get this far. To put that in perspetive, a National League club would take that many ties to get to the FA Cup Final.

Also, 3 of the 4 semi finalists groundshare. So Sunday ties look likely.

I had a few quid on Chertsey after the 4th Round. Unfortunately, thats literally all I could get on. The odds are merely for show to anyone that doesnt have a new or losing account.

That crowd of 602 was the biggest since Canterbury reformed, and also first time they've reached the semis. The run has come at the perfect time for them as there are concerns over the club's future (I hadn't realised things were quite as bad) after plans for a new ground were overwhelmingly rejected recently and having explored 26 potential sites with no other options under consideration.
I do think of them as a bit like Slough, there's definitely potential there if they can ever get their own ground. The chairman in the last week has said he thinks they can do what Maidstone have done, and whilst I think that's optimistic as IMO Maidstone are the biggest Kent non-league club, i'd definitely expect them to be in the Isthmian League.

It reminds me of when Herne Bay got to the semis in 2012 (although that was different as HB won the title that season, Canterbury are only mid-table). I was disappointed not to be able to go to the home leg as it clashed with a Reading game I was going to, and the attendance was almost 2000  Not surprisingly for a ground that normally gets around 200, even then at a lower level than they play at now, they couldn't cope with that amount of people and there was trouble.

Four Of Clubs NL Results:

Saturday 3rd March

Bedfont & Feltham 5-0 Godalming Town

Made the short journey to watch this.

Its a great venue for spotting planes. Right by the perimitter to Heathrow.

It must also be the closest 2 separate football grounds come together. You could literally kick a ball to Bedfont Sports, must be less than 50 meters apart. I did consider switching games at HT for the double ground score, but that would have been filth?

Game marked the 30th anniversary of 5 Feltham players being involved in a serious car accident after a game with 3 being killed and 2 with life changing injuries. They were supposed to be playing in the old Feltham kit from 1989, made a big deal of it. Then at the last minute said they had to play in their away kit. Not sure what happened but slightly embarrassing.

Oh well, the Hellenic have surpassed themselves.....

It’ll be held at oxf*rd Ardley Utd which is 50 miles away from both Windsor and Ascot and is a small, tidy, but 3 sided ground with a sloping pitch and a tiny clubhouse - completely unsuitable for a Cup Final.

I mean, WTAF?

Oh, and not that it really matters but this is a pic of the gents toilet! :D

Slightly further afield but North Ferriby United were wound up yesterday.

FA Trophy winners 3 years ago and in Conference National 2 seasons ago but were 19 points adrift at the bottom of the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Windsor 0-4 Longlevens

Very poor performance today against lowly opposition. The wind was ridiculous but they beat us 2-0 in each half with and without the wind.

No Dan Roberts today - he was playing for Slough. I guess the next (and last) time we will see him in the Windsor shirt will be the Challenge Cup Final.

Dan was an unused substitute yesterday, as Slough beat Billericay Town 2-1, lovely stuff. Looking forward to seeing him soon though, as from what I heard when the Rebels beat Hemel he played well.

Unsavoury scenes at half-time as one of the Billericay subs took umbrage to something a home supporter had uttered, jumped the fence and allegedly went for a 15-year old. Stay classy lads...

- Got to this without any difficulty – oddly leafy Brum suburbia North of the City between the M6 and it’s twin Toll road.
- Game on the balance until a late goal extended the ‘Royals’ lead to two and kept their hopes of reaching a PO spot alive.
- The visitors (nicknamed the Cuckoos) had more of the ball 2nd half but the blustery conditions helped neither side.
- 3G pitch big seated stand – club shop and a food hatch doing all the standard fare.

-
SL1-S
Barnstaple Town 4-1 Fleet Town – Fleet slip to the bottom after this heavy defeat against their fellow relegation candidates – I think it’s been mentioned that the N.Devon side may be taking a voluntary 2 step drop down to the South West Peninisula League for 19-20

Cinderford Town P-P Thatcham Town
Melksham Town 3-2 Highworth Town
Winchester City
{SIX} 6-1 Slimbridge – City four up by H/T

HELLP
Abingdon United 0-2 Ardley United
Binfield 4-2 Tuffley Rovers
Bishops Cleeve 3-3 Holmer Green
Brackley Town Saints
5-1 Ascot United - Yellamen’s form continues it’s spiral downwards and they now well out of the title race, can only finish 4th
– indeed they only have two league games left – finishing their league season on 30th April with a Cup Final date set for 6th May.
- they are still in the Quarter Finals of the Floodlit Cup.

Brimscombe & Thrupp 2-0 Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Reading City 0-2 Virginia Water
Wantage Town
1-1 Shrivenham
Windsor
0-4 Longlevens - as stated an unexpectedly heavy defeat to the side at the foot of the table.
- A quirk of the Fixture Computer (bag of Fag Packet system) has the sides meeting in the league again next Saturday; after which Windsor have a run of 5 home games.

HELL1E
Abingdon Town 0-7 Holyport – since I watched the Abbots get a creditable draw at Wallingford at the end of last month, they’ve lost three straight games at an aggregate score of 0:23 !!

What makes the defeat to Longlevens even worse is that the club (Longlevens) have tweeted thanks for turning out to the guys in the team who had had a heavy day at Cheltenham races on Friday!

Oh well, maybe we’ll get revenge next Saturday!
