Euro 2020

by Silver Fox » 03 Dec 2018 13:13

Did nobody care that the qualifying draw took place yesterday? Maybe that's a side effect of the tournament getting bloated and the majority of teams you'd expect to qualify will almost certainly do so without breaking a sweat.

I'm rather hoping Russia are beatable, but at least for once Scotland haven't been drawn with Germany, Italy or France like normally happens

Didn't really pay any interest to be honest. As you say, the qualification process is probably going to be quite straight forward, so it's not that interesting at this stage.

My only interest was really to see what games England will have (Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo) as opposed to worrying about how tricky the group will be.

Maybe the Nations League has had a bit of an impact on it too?

Biggest problem was this draw was even more convoluted that usual. Take for example that N.Ireland are in a group with Germany and Netherlands despite the fact that ROI were the team drawn. Reason being that Netherlands, Germany and ROI are hosts and UEFA want to maximise the qualification chances of all hosts so only 2 hosts can be in the same pool.

That and as HB said, the success of the Nations League rather overshadows the trudge of the ECQ.

Got tickets for all four Wales home qualifiers for me and my son at just over £100 in total. Very good pricing as usual from the FAW

Group A: England, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Kosovo.
Group B: Portugal, Ukraine, Serbia, Lithuania, Luxembourg.
Group C: Netherlands, Germany, Northern Ireland, Estonia, Belarus.
Group D: Switzerland, Denmark, Republic of Ireland, Georgia, Gibraltar.
Group E: Croatia, Wales, Slovakia, Hungary, Azerbaijan.
Group F: Spain, Sweden, Norway, Romania, Faroe Islands, Malta.
Group G: Poland, Austria, Israel, Slovenia, Macedonia, Latvia.
Group H: France, Iceland, Turkey, Albania, Moldova, Andorra.
Group I: Belgium, Russia, Scotland, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, San Marino.
Group J: Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Greece, Armenia, Liechtenstein

How do the play-offs fit in?

Each separate League (A, B, C and D) in the UEFA Nations League has been allocated one UEFA EURO 2020 place. Four sides from each League will contest single-leg semi-finals and a one-off final (entirely specific to the EURO) in March 2020. The winner of each of these four one-off finals gets a ticket to UEFA EURO 2020.

In theory, the play-offs are contested by the four winners of the quartet of groups that form each of the four Leagues. However, if a UEFA Nations League group winner has already qualified via the European Qualifiers, their spot goes to the next best-ranked team in their League.

How the play-offs will work

22/11/19: European Qualifiers play-off draw
01/12/19: UEFA EURO 2020 final tournament draw
26–31/03/20: European Qualifiers play-offs
01/04/20: Additional final tournament draw if required
12/06–12/07/20: UEFA EURO 2020 final tournament

Silver Fox FFS Scotland

Started like a team who have a play-off place guaranteed and don't fancy their chances of finishing above Belgium & Russia.

Georgia's Jano Ananidze pulls Fabian Schaer's tongue from his throat when he was knocked unconscious after a clash of heads. The most shocking part of this story is that after treatment he was allowed to keep playing.

I saw that. Anyone associated with the decison to let him play on should be immediately suspended by FIFA.

What a miss.
They really don't have a great deal to choose from.

Well done Northern Ireland, they do look a team and might just cause a shock when it comes to the big games v Holland and Germany.

The Republicans meanwhile look a rabble-inevitably the IRA poster boy McLean lost his rag and got booked.

I don't think that Fifa are exactly the shining light of ethics tbh.

Went to Luxembourg v Ukraine

Gutted, last minute own goal gave Ukraine a 2-1 win.

Half the crowd were Ukrainians, where did they come from? ( Ukraine I guess).

Lux were top before tonight, having beaten Lithuania on Friday.
