Top 5 Rivals

by RoyalSwine90 » 30 Aug 2019 12:27

http://www.sportbible.com/football/reactions-news-rivalries-the-top-five-rivals-of-each-premier-league-team-according-to-data-20190826

'The League Of Love And Hate' is an annual survey carried out by tens and thousands of supporters from Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two teams.

They decide who is the most popular among their fanbase and who is the most loathed.

According to this survey, our top 5 rivals are:

Swindon (74%)
Oxford (70%)
Brentford (52%)
Wycombe (43%)
Watford (30%)

What do people think to this?

I'm a little surprised 43% have opted for Wycombe

Who invented the word ‘fanbase’ ?
Is it short for ‘fans’ ?

Certainly can’t see why Watford are on that list, absolutely no history of rivalry there.
Never seen Wycombe as rivals. Either, they just happen to be local but we’ve rarely been in the same division.
Surprised QPR and Fulham don’t feature and historically we’ve never really been on good terms with Wolves.
Suspect some of these may be rather one way things, doubt we’d figure on a list put together by Wolves fans.

Watford

Bristol City, QPR and even Southampton would be way ahead of any list of mine.

Stretching further add Aldershot and Basingstoke

OK Swindon and Oxford, Brentford maybe - but very dubious about wycombe and watford. What about the fake hoops, aka QPR? I doubt there's much love for West Ham or Leeds either.

Reckon they’ve just looked for the closest grounds to Reading

Readings rivalry was Aldersh*t but that’s been more or less dead for 20 plus years

After that there isn’t a rivalry with anyone as such though you feel the likes of a couple of the west London outfits should be rivals and you can see some logic to Watford if you’re an outsider but there never has been one in that direction.

Wolves isn’t really a rivalry now MM has been long gone but there is Brighton and Bournemouth but think that’s more from then than us

Swindon and Oxford have a rivalry with each other and other than being lower division clubs near Reading we’ve never really been with either long enough to develop anything much

Wycombe? (for now at least anyway)

Let’s face it Reading do not have a true derby game nor any real rivalry with anyone

Yeah closest thing we have for me is nearby similar sized teams about the same standard - ie Brighton, Brentford, QPR, Bristol City, maybe Watford at a big push

But granted I wouldn’t call any of them local rivals in the truest sense

We appear second on both Swindon's and Oxford's lists, and fourth on Southampton's and Bournemouth's.

Brentford. Nah.
What about the Sham? Always had an edge since Pardew and then of course Kebe and his socks.

Gawd. I don't think I could pick 5.

Swindon and Oxford certainly. Might stretch to Aldershot out of tradition though I'm too young to have experienced them as a thing.

Maybe Pompey and Saints because they dominated South Today coverage. And Pompey are pcunts anyway. But not really.

Brighton are massively up themselves, but the issue is the fans not the club.

Bournemouth, I barely even think about. Wycombe aren't in anyway a rival. Watford - absolute lols not a rival at all. Wolves rivalry is dead and not local.

QPR maybe, but more Hoop related than locality. Brentford, barely register - that's basically all one way and not from us.

West Ham are total arsehat knuckledraggers, but it's not really a local rivalry.

So... er...
Swindon
Oxford
Pompey
West Ham
QPR
:| :?:

Back in the 60s it was Swindon, later Oxford came through from Div 4 and were also rivals.

In those palmy days no one was quite sure where Aldershot was. We did have a couple of cup games c1967, but any form of competition was strictly limited until Reading were relegated in 1971

Oxford
Swindon

Obvious top 2.

Then I'd probably put three of Wham, QPR, Southampton, and Bristol City to round out the top six, although I have no real strong feelings towards any of them.

Could be interesting this season with both Maidenhead and Woking doing well at the top of the National League. Could have possible rivals there if a miracle did occur (certainly in Maidenhead’s case anyway).
