Yep, right down the middle.
So, if he goes, is there anyone out there that wouldn’t be ok with Chris Hughton as his successor?
Because as far as unifying the fan base, it occurred to me that Hughton just might me our most unanimously approved appointment in quite some time. Even Coppell had his detractors at first.
Chris Hughton would be a great appointment IMO but interestingly enough, in 2014 he joined Brighton who were in an almost identical situation to us when Gomes came last season. Here's some stats between the two
Hughton (Brighton) 2014/15 P22 W6 D6 L10 Points : 24 PPG : 1.09
Gomes (Reading) 2018/19 P23 W6 D10 L7 Points : 28 PPG : 1.22
This shows Gomes actually outperformed Hughton when both joined their retrospective clubs. The difference being is Hughton built on his foundations of keeping Brighton up whereas Gomes seemed to rip up his plan and start again (although to be fair a dodgy pre season with the youth wouldn't have helped).
Football is a very unforgiving game. Owners pump money at whatever cost and they'll want to see a return quickly. In the 9 games that have preceded the influx of signings, we've got 8 points. Word it whatever way you want, make all the excuses in the world, it's simply not good enough in the current climate. 15 years ago, possibly. But there's an inverse relationship between the amount of money pumped in and the amount of time an owner will give you
However, this does also show one thing. Whilst Hughton is a very good manager with a very good pedigree, if we were to get him, it may not be the instant fix that some people may expect...as the stats above show
