Form

by Stranded » 02 Dec 2019 13:05

Bored at lunchtime this morning and looking at the form over Bowen's first 7 games and how well placed we are in those tables (W4, D1, L2) and thought I would see how the season may pan out if we can keep up this kind of form over the remainder of the season - was pleasantly surprised by what we would do and what else may happen.

All teams form calculated over their last 7 games also, with such a small sample it's just a bit of "fun" really and won't tell us too much - points added - where 2 teams on same points taken the bigger fraction of a point to indicate better GD.

Key points:

If all teams carry on with the same form until the end of the season:

We will finish 8th on GD
The top 4 will be well clear of everyone else
The bottom 7 will be cut well adrift
Stoke & Barnsley will save themselves
Wigan, Luton & Charlton will drop.

Full Table

1. Leeds 105 points
2. WBA 104
3. Brentford 101
4. Fulham 96
5. Bristol City 78
6. Hull City 76
7. Blackburn 73
8. Reading 73
9. Millwall 72
10. Forest 72
11. Cardiff 70
12. Preston 69
13. Sheff Weds 63
14. Derby 63
15. Swansea 60
16. Birmingham 59
17. Huddersfield 52
18. Middlesboro 44
19. Stoke 37
20. QPR 36
21. Barnsley 31
22. Charlton 30
23. Luton 28
24. Wigan 24

If three teams were to get 100+ points it would be the greatest  of all time - at any level - ever

(and yes, I know you've already put your caveats in)

On the plus side, Leeds to finish SO CLOSE to our record...but not get it.

No doubt their fans would sing "we've got the record....105" :D

Yeah, I nearly took the points out as that just won't happen - would mean Leeds just dropping 9 more points this season.

but I will stick to my theory that you will need the lowest points tally required to get into 2nd at end of season, lowest points tally to finish 6th and you will need the highest to finish in 21st place.

I clearly need coffee, I thought you were saying you needed higher points to finish in 21st than in 2nd.....

Does this mean the quality is good, because the teams are evenly matched or is the quality bad because the are no stand-out teams?

Sky came up with the stat that since 14th October only Leeds, Brentford and WBA have managed more points than Reading from games played.

Therefore if the season had started then, Reading would be 4th

Yet we’re all still unconvinced

Well we've not played well and certainly ridden our luck. But points >>> performances 8)

Are we? I'm very convinced about Bowen. He's done a fantastic job and the team are one or two players, or clicking in the right combination, from being potential promotion contenders next season.

To recover after a run of 3 defeats in 4 to then go 8 pts from 12 whilst only conceding 1 goal is a pretty decent barometer of where we are.

Something is building here and being around the top 10 soon is a realistic target IMHO.

21 points in 12 games in charge is a huge turnaround under Bowen
We are certainly playing in a more streetwise way under him.

The league is ridiculously tight this year. We're 11 points and a game in hand away from 3rd. So if we win our game in hand we'd have half a season to make up 8 points. In this league, in this year you just need a few little bits of luck to separate a bad season from a good one.

PNE, Fulham, Forest (5-7) will be a massive next three games. 6/7 points out of them and we'd make serious progress up the table.

I’m not expecting too much from the next few games. Bowen has done an excellent job and we certainly have had a bit of luck along the way, but there’s still a few too many issues - over reliance on Swift, defensive lapses, injuries to forwards - which make me think we’re destined for between 12-15th position. Which is fine really considering where we were

Obvs if we do get results at the likes of Preston I might reconsider that view

I was definitely in the camp of thinking the Bowen appointed was a pretty shrewd move at the time. And current form is demonstrating that right now.

Yes we’re not a perfect team and give too many chances away to be comfortable. But I think we’re pretty decent to watch, a lot more streetwise and difficult to beat. We’re still trying to find the right formation and combinations but at this time of the season you’re always going to get injuries so need to be flexible. And make do with those players available

Dare I say it but we're a bit McD. Playing badly but still coming away with the points, or maybe not badly, but not winning convincingly.

Good comparison.

McDermott came in with a decent squad, undid some appalling mismanagement and:
1) shot us up the table, then built on that and
2) took us to a PO Final and then
3) won the league.

Bowen's doing a good job of mirroring stage 1 for sure.

It’s a bit of shame our run from Brentford to Stoke, only picking up 5 points

Even three more points would have been massive for us right now, and got us really looking up the table. Swifts injury was a really bad blow for us, really hope he can stay fit now
