paultheroyal Appears to be a social media shut down from the players over past few days - probably wise.

Really hope the fans get behind the team from the off - more than usual - and collectively we get the 3 points.

This. We’ve all had a good old moan to ourselves, each other and in social media. Let’s just put it down to a bad day at the office for everyone from the manager down and give one and all full and very vocal support from 5he off tomorrow.

I have even asked my 8 year old son for some extra vocal support on Saturday. He is up for the fight.

WestYorksRoyal I think we should sack Bowen, bring in some untested guy after searching for a couple of months and sell Moore and Swift after several years in a bad team. With the money from that, and FFP off our back, we can go big on a load of Brazilian players through Mattos, Europeans through Joorabchian and a couple of premier league loanees. 10 or 11 quality signings overall. Then watch it all come together.

Edit: Also forgot about Kadeem Harris. He played well against us on the opening day. Definitely worth £7m and a 5 year contract

Getthebeerens Sacking Bowen would be the wrong move in my opinion, why sack the guy who is learning about the squads weaknesses throughout the season and then don't give him the summer to address the issues and make us stronger. Ultimately we are struggling as we are missing Joao as a target man to build play off and we don't have any decent wingers to give service to the likes of Baldock and Puscas, again something that will need to be addressed in the summer and probably why we are lacking a Plan B at the moment.

Let's face it we have seen that Wigan performance through various different managers, so ultimately we can't just keep blaming every manager. I believe we have a fairly decent squad in terms of football talent but there is much to be desired about the mental side of the game and the desire to win.

Very good post.

quickwingerswife Bowen won’t last till Christmas. Good bloke but Chinese won’t accept 9k crowds for long. Team look a bit overcoached now and frightened of upsetting the template. Shame, all looked rosy for a while.

Agree the owners won’t put up with it for long. I do hope Bowen gets time though. It’ll take some time for the crowds to return, he needs to be given a chance next season after the summer clear out.

Although when it happens the owners will have to revert from previous recruitment. I don’t want another Gomes, Clement, Clarke, Bowen assistant style appointment.

Someone outspoken, nasty and can upset the apple-cart. A headline grabber. Not necessarily Warnock or Holloway but somebody of that ilk that can resonate with the fans frustrations and hold their hands up when things go wrong.

Very good post.
indeed, a very good post, but (sadly) how many seasons and how many managers have these same good posts with these same sentiments been rolled out?

It’s becoming a ’repeat to fade’

So - with 10 games left we are just 2 points behind last season's total and already past the previous season.

And worth remembering Bowen took over after 11 games (I think) with 8 points on the board.

Yes, there have been 2 or 3 awful performances (all at home sadly) but what anyone reckons progress has been made.

Taking all games, he has done very well

I know you said ‘of that ilk’ but if Warnock was appointed I would cease attending games. Luckily I doubt he would be interested given his publicly stated dislike of the club. No idea why we’d need someone outspoken or nasty. Klopp seems the model of the modern manager, does the job well, great empathy with fans but a nice guy.

Progress has been made in terms of results and can be supported by statistics easily

Performances is another question however. Even today, in a so called "comfortable" performance, 7 shots to the opponents 23. Still think we drop too deep but today is a win and you can't get anything more than that

Just think with the situation he inherited with the bloated expensive squad, bottom 3, shite crowds etc it was always simply a case of surviving this season and making small steps

Bowen has very much done that imo - obvs once we get the 2 more wins or so we need

Big summer ahead. Sensible decisions need to be made and the wage bill cut to give us some flexibility again

Don't know how many cliches you want but.... Rome wasn't built in a day, One step at a time, etc etc

Turn the results around first, then we can worry about performances. Barnsley's shots today really only endangered the people in the ED stand and the guys on the crane (what were they doing anyway?)

Today was a real make or break for me. Either the wheels had fallen off and we’d be sucked into shite form or Bowen was having none of it and would turn it around. Looks like it’s the latter. He really doesn’t like being beaten and will change half the team if he has to to prevent it. Good man. He’ll go far.

A few squad upgrades in the summer will see us comfortably into midtable next season. Sometimes you forget how young and inexperienced a number of the current squad are at this level. Lot of money at the top of the Championship. Soon be a PL2.

And prior to Bowen it wasn't unheard of for us to get zero shots on target.

We don't need to fire in shot after shot if we've already scored 2 goals.

We've gone on a rather more extended poor run than we'd like, but really, there aren't actually many obvious poor results in that run.

Millwall - were on an excellent run at the time, but disappointing
Forest - good result
Bristol - right at the top
Cardiff - ok result
Hull - disappointing for sure, but one mistake stopped us winning
WBA - top team
Weds - comfortable win, even before the red we were on top
Leeds - top team and a slightly lucky goal
Wigan - one of the form sides
Barnsley - comfortable win

Really there's only two disappointing showings there and one was a draw. It's just been a very hard run and we've struggled a bit. I'd certainly take that poor run over any of the ones we had under Gomes, Clement or Stam. It's still 9 points from 10 games. We've had managers where that level of point return is basically their whole tenure.

But for this narrative to work, we need to kick on with our run in. It's easy; even Brentford are totally out of form. If 0.9ppg is acceptable from a tough run, I'd like to see 2 per game over the remainder of the season.

UPDATE

RFC under Bowen

If the League had started with Bowen's first game, we would be in the play-offs!

Table since October 11th 2019

1 25 14 6 5 39 23 +16 48 Leeds
2 25 13 8 4 43 24 +19 47 West Bromwich Albion
3 25 13 6 6 50 24 +26 45 Brentford
4 25 13 5 7 31 27 +04 44 Fulham
5 25 10 9 6 39 27 +12 39 Blackburn
6 25 10 7 8 32 24 +08 37 Reading
===============================================
7 24 10 7 7 30 24 +06 37 Nottingham Forest
8 25 9 10 6 31 26 +05 37 Millwall

Throw in two FA Cup wins as well.

Hard to ask for much more considering how things looked when he took over.
