Was surprised Gomez didn't start at centre-back - not the first time Klopp has made a tactical change at the back, having dropped him for Lovren at Watford. I don't get it myself. Liverpool have conceded something like five in 16 games when Van Dijk and Gomez start together.

(Not that Matip did anything wrong, and is probably one of the most under-rated players in the PL).

Yeah agree, Gomez and Van Dijk are a really good partnership. The pace of Gomez and the strength and commanding presence of Van Dijk make them pretty much the best centre back partnershop in the league for me.

Van Dijk + anyone is a great partnership tbf

Exception to the rule is Dejan Lovren, a barely unrivalled mistake waiting to happen

Some slightly ridiculous defensive numbers coming out of Liverpool's game vs. Palace - as much as it was an easy win and Palace didn't get much of a sniff, you credit Van Dijk and Gomez for much of the latter. They touched the ball 273 times between them, of which a slightly mind-boggling 260 were passes, and 239 of those were accurate (92%) ; they also won ten aeriel duels and made seven interceptions between them, and neither was dispossessed.

Alisson didn't touch the ball with his hands in open play.

Yeah, Van Dijk and Gomez seem a very good partnership, as you alluded to recently

Obviously it helped having Zaha go off injured but you can only beat what’s in front of you and once again, Liverpool’s back five gave very little away

Think they’ll need more depth in the fullback areas this summer, but that comes down to many different factors, Williams looked lively in his brief appearance today

You could have played at the back last night and not looked out of place tbh, Palace were completely toothless and rolled over for Liverpool.

Sundays game with City will be really interesting, I think it will tell us exactly what Liverpool need going into next season which in truth isn't a great deal. Think their youngsters have looked great each time I have seen them, I hope Liverpool give them the playing time rather than bringing in expensive players to just sit on their bench.

The use of "defensive" is probably a misnomer in relation to last night's game as both of them pushed so far forward that many of their touches were in the opposition half and often sources of attack.

Last night Liverpool were just majestic .
I do believe that with the brilliance of the mighty reds and that of City there have been no better top 2 sides in the past 60 years in English football.
Man Utd of the late 60s and Liverpool's 70s and 80s were very good sides but IMHO this past 2 seasons has been rare in us having TWO excellent teams in England at the same time and both have been a joy to watch.

Yep, apparently that's the first time since stats like this started being recorded in 2008-09.
Also read that Trent had 52 touches in the first half. He made 37 passes, five crosses and no tackles.
