Rumour - Robert Sánchez (on loan from Brighton)

by Magic Hat » 22 Sep 2020 14:01

Not to come across all Focher, but my brother-in-law is an estate agent has just told me Robert Sánchez has come into his place as he's coming on loan from Brighton. Never heard of him, but according to wiki 22 year old goalkeeper.

Can't see this happening at all, Brighton aren't loaning out a goalkeeper if he isn't getting playing time and he isn't going to dislodge Rafael. There is no reason on getting a young keeper in on loan when we've got a dependable enough backup in Southwood.

Unless we're selling Rafael and fancy another Virginiaesque debacle.

Don't get this style comment regarding Virginia (seen it on twitter as well). Yeah he was pants for us, but that doesn't mean he isn't going to progress in the future. He has played for the under categories in the Portugal set-up so must be half decent, but wasn't ready for full on first team action in one of the hardest leagues in the world.

This doesn't mean he won't become a competent 'keeper in a couple of years.

Indeed - with convos like this it's always important to remember a young Emi failed to cover himself in glory in goal in that 7-5 game, including an absolute howler for Leigertwood's goal. Small samples are small samples, and things change over time. GK errors are probably pretty randomly distributed over a season - perhaps we had Virgina in goal when those random errors came at once and it evolved into a situ where the risk (immature performances with mistakes) wasn't worth the reward (better player than should rightfully be at this level)

Relatedly, if the performances matched the opinions of Rangers/Forest/Brighton fans for Ovie/Pele/Baldock we would have dud/dud/star rather than the other way round, so I don't think Everton fans and coaches should really pay much attention to our thoughts on him

Did think this too

Shock horror that 19 year old struggled in his first stint as a goalkeeper, especially at Championship level
