How many Managers have you been through ?

by Westwood52 » 06 Nov 2020 15:29

A mate of mine mentioned he has been through 18 Spurs managers. We are roughly the same age and having nothing else to do I counted up how many managers I have been through.Ignoring caretakers I came up with 28.The best win % in modern times turned out to be Pardew.Ignoring Pauno of course and temps.
Not sure who the worst has been.Probably either Bullivant or the late Tommy Burns. The best despite Pardews record was undoubtedly Steve.

I've been a Reading fan since Pardew so for permanent managers I've had:

Pardew
Coppell
Rodgers
McDermott
Adkins
Clarke
McDermott v2
Stam
Gomes
Bowen
Paunovic

So 11 for me. Surprised I got that all off memory.

23 full time, permanent managers, I think, starting with Roy Bentley (just!) - or 22 if you count Jimmy and Geordie as one.

Yeah I am talking s##t I am only Johnstone (briefly) in front of you. However there is no mention of Henderson 59 days and Wallbanks 104 days.I can vaguely remember Henderson as a player.I assume he was a temp while the Board sorted something out.Wallbanks was interesting though. He was the physio, but 3 months odd is quite a tenure not to be counted.Anybody know the story behind this ? Filling in again ?Johnstone was manager for close on 8 years more enlightened times ?Maurice Evans tenure close to 7 years.

1st game was around 1971. Being a young scroat at the time I can't recall the manager. The first I definitely recall was Charlie Hurley.

Was more concerned with nicking the toilet rolls from the train into Reading and chucking them on the pitch

Between Hurley, Evans and Branfoot we only had three managers in 17 years - such different times.

Yep Jimmy Wallbanks deserves a mention for his 3 month stint between Mansell & Hurley

As I recall after McGhee left, Reading had a quartet of caretakers for the Wolves game; Jimmy Quinn, Mick Gooding, Ady Williams and Jeff Hopkins.

Johnston apparently longest serving of the lot.

Ray Hnederson was coach and applied for the job but Mansell got it. When Mansell was sacked they took an age appointing Hurley and Jimmy Wallbanks did quite well in the meantime. If you;re counting caretkers I think Eddie Nzidewicki and John Haselden also had a go. John Gorman too after Burns? Not sure.
