It all feels really quiet on the transfer front when deals that couldn't have been pushed through in the Summer might have happened now.
Presumably ongoing covid has made a difference in that there is greater financial insecurity around clubs than in normal times.

pauno presser, Transfer update

"We don't have any incomings right now. We've been contacted by various agents and agencies who have been offering players like everyone else but we still haven't found anyone who can help us.

We have some targets and will probably have to wait until the end of the month so we can see if they are still available or their status changes."

windermereROYAL That Derby pundit`s comment is beyond embarrassing.

I don't know they are a big club you know. I think we should offer him to them with bids starting at £100M. As they are such a big club they could surely afford that much.

Haha Derby aren't even that big a club. I'd love them to go down now! Why'd Joao even go to somewhere that's a step down right now.

I was musing to myself yesterday evening; our first team squad now is largely an example of excellent recruitment, so if we keep that going this window we'll hopefully be in a position next year to kick on and improve further. If you at each position:

GK - Rafael on a free supported by academy products

Full backs - Mix of frees, loans and academy products. Did we pay a nominal fee for Araruna?

CBs - Bargain fee for Moore he has paid back many times over. Morrison on a free, supported by academy talent and Gibson on loan

Midfield - Great free transfers for Swift and Laurent. Olise and Rinomhota from academy. Fee paid for Ejaria but good deal overall. Aluko was poor business but one of the last remnants of the Gourlay era

Strikers - Big fee 10000% worth it for Joao. Jury out on Puscas still but not a disaster. Meite on a free, and Baldock disappointing (another Gourlay signing, along with McNulty out on loan who still has a contract to 2022!)

It really does feel like we're getting the bad decisions from the Gourlay era off our books. So I actually trust the club again going into this window, as they have earned the trust over the past 2 years.

yep. Who was the last poor value money signing we've made? Or even free but on high wages?

The two last Jan weren't special but I suspect they cost next to nothing relatively, and Araruna has shown potential

It's the improvement in long term planning which was great. The improvement started by getting in 5 high quality, critically important short term loanees to keep us up. It worked, but it left a huge hole in our squad and a return to square one in the summer. We had to invest to stand still.

While Esteves, Semedo and Gibson add value to our squad, they are not key players I worry about losing. Now if we have money, we can invest to improve instead (aside from the Richards situation).

I expect some of the loans have cost a few quid - Semedo, Esteves, Pele etc. But at least the commitment is contained to the 6 months and all have brought something to the side (expecting more from Esteves second half of season)

Reading are eyeing a move for Colchester United defender Cohen Bramall with Colchester considering cashing in on him rather than losing for nothing in the summer.

Reading are keeping close tabs on Chelsea youngster Jordan Aaron-Dembele. Aaron-Dembele
has previously been on the radar of some of Europes biggest clubs but having fallen out of favour at the west London club is now looking to kick his career on and is willing to drop down a division for regular first team football

Stephan johansson and Kevin McDonald both available from Fulham. Good cover or rotation for cdm. Both play good football so will fit in. Loan until the summer maybe

Would we not be better off just offering him a pre contract agreement (much like Bayern have done with Omar Richards) so we can sign him for the nominal fee in the Summer.

Unfortunately you can't offer UK based players pre-contracts until a month before their contract is due to expire, we could offer players from the outside the UK a contract now but not Uk based players.

JLow was reporting that if the squad stays the same as it is now then FFP would allow for 2 low cost additions in January (presumably Mendes on loan in the last few days of the window would be one of them). If Reading sell one of the current squad then the club would be allowed to replace that player.

Presumably we could churn any of our existing loan players and replace them ?
Surelynthe equation for bringing in players would differ depending on whether they were loans or contracted players ?
A 4 month loan signing bears no comparison cost wise to a three year contract unless you are bringing in marquee signings and pay8ng all their wages.

25 year old midfielder who joined Fulham at the age of 8, Chelsea apparently then paid Fulham 80 grand for him 2 years later  but was released at the age of 16. Went to Norwich’s academy before loan spells at Cambridge and Luton. Moved to Luton permanently then to Barnsley racking up 120+ apps for the two clubs. Joined Oostende on a 3 year deal in August 2020.

He normally plays a bit further forward, but I wonder if he could play a JL/Rino type role - he seems to have so much energy.

That said, can't even tell where that rumours coming from so assume it's rubbish.
