Worst ever Reading FC miss

by WestYorksRoyal » 02 Apr 2021 22:00

Quite simply, can you remember one worse than today? I remember Steve Stone missing one comparable against us at Elm Park, but can't remember a miss from one of our players quite that bad.

David Leworthy 1990-91 away at Crewe on a freezing cold Friday night on a partly snow covered pitch.

We lost 1-0

At Elland Rd? That was a shocker. 2yds out, open net, put it into orbit.

We made David Healy look like Messi that day.

The miss didn’t matter but as an isolated chance... couldn’t have done that if he tried.

That whole season, was the worst season ever. We were tediously mediocre until New Year then shambolically shite beyond belief til the end of the season. No surprise really as we were imploding financially, until SJM arrived in the spring.

My lowest point as a supporter. I contemplated calling time on going to games.

1990/91 was an odd season. Began well (3-1 away at Exeter). In amongst the play-offs by mid-october then fell away. I did have a brief hiatus after the Colchester cup defeat. The signing of Danny Bailey saw a post Xmas / New Year uplift but Gilkesy broke his leg at Southend and that was it. Porterfield sacked, McGhee comes in and Stoke go on the rampage after the final game...

Steve Stone for Forest v Reading. At least Joao still had a keeper somewhere in front of him.

When he tripped over the ball/his feet about 6 inches from goal? Was it against Leicester?

^ that might be the one I'm thinking about

Regardless, people saying today's miss was the worst ever are seriously overhyping it

It was unbelievably shit.

How that ranks on the pantheon of the unbelievably shit is debatable but my initial thought is that it’s up there right at the fcuking top.

I happens. It’s actually going to be quite funny when you look back in a year or two.

However, in the short term, if Reading miss out on the play offs by a point....

If we miss the play offs by a point it will be because Birmimgham did the double over us and we lost to Wycombe. To be fair, Joao played his part in those as well, not that I'm blaming him particulalrly, the whole team were shit in all 3 games.

It will also be because of last night. Joao’s miss was an effective three point swing denying us of two points and giving Barnsley one. If we miss out on the play offs to Barnsley it will have been a massive opportunity that’s been wasted. They are a limited side.

In terms of shitness, Joao's miss yesterday actually made the news sites over here. Can't recall last time we even got a mention.

Seeing that, the ball never seems to properly land at Ferdinand's feet but he was only a few yards out of an open goal. Whereas Joao very much had the ball under control and the whole goal to aim at.

Yep, i agree. I think Joao's miss is the worst i have seen from a Reading player in the 41 years ive been watching. There isn't even a hint of an excuse. I vaguely remember the Leworthy i miss at Crewe as i was there, but from memory it was a driven cross ( so a very minor degree of difficulty) and a missed tap in with an open goal from about a yard.
