I'm almost a bit disappointed now. Was looking forward to it being a complete failure.

Should be consequences, won't be consequences.

Hosted by Ainsley Harriott.

They'll have to be significantly more circumspect in future. But they won't abandon this.

Just think of all these poor cash strapped clubs, and the millions they'll have spent on planning, consulting and marketing arsehats for this. The sweeteners and cushy dinners for TV execs in Asia etc.

Ornstein says Milan are now withdrawing.

Atletico Madrid will apparently make a decision tomorrow.

Only Arsenal out of the 6 expressed real remorse and said the word "sorry" in their statements.

Florentino Perez was due to be on Spanish radio half an hour ago, he hasn't shown up yet.

You know they have just sneaked a 36-team Champions League with 225 games & VIP passes for two ESL-type clubs past the lot of you, right? Quick, they're bringing the joint venture with UEFA & £5bn private-equity stake in next. Look into my eyes, not around the eyes etc

They haven't sneaked it past anyone. It's been widely discussed and the new format had been criticised by many

Some proper edgy twitter bellends (i know, right?!) tonight desperately trying to pretend that not liking the ESL idea MUST mean you are a big fan of UEFA

Guardian reporting because the government promised the FA they will pass any law they can to support them, the FA were able to credibly threaten to refuse work permits and suspend these teams.

Big oof.

To top it all off, both AC Milan and Inter Milan are leaving so the whole things being suspended.

JR I’ve been debating with mates all evening and have been the lone voice in seeing the potential in the ESL.

It will be a much more attractive option to viewers and broadcasters than the waining UCL.

Traditional football rights have peaked and with new types of forms of broadcast and players in the content market, it’s critical to get the product right.

This new “Swiss style” UCL approved today sounds horrendous and clearly not the solution for maximising broadcast revenues for the game.

The Dirty Dozen clearly don’t trust UEFA to organise an effective competition and maximise the media rights.

They’ve taken the nuclear route to negotiation which is a risky tactic. Time will tell if they achieve it by but they will have concessions planned.

I suspect governing bodies to cut the rhetoric and get in line when they get in to negotiations and some form of promotion / relegation and 2nd tier ESL brought in to get to a compromise.

VAR is ruining the game. The ESL will not.

Get a grip. VAR isn't ruining the game.

Fans of premier league fans can no longer celebrate a goal properly.

The single most joyous point of being a fan is celebrating a goal. That moment is diluted far too much by VAR.

Joyous imperfection is better than dull perfection.

Grovelling apology from the owner of the Merseyside Reds franchise just now

He apologises to the fans of the franchise explaining how they are important and refers to the club using the popular nickname “LFC” that the fans always use

Did he not read up on the history before taking ownership of the club? If you piss off the supporters then they will not stop until they have achieved the result they want, he would have known this if he had any interest in football. Good luck to him, he is going to need it.

I think you're trying a bit hard slating the use of LFC there Uke. That seems like a reasonable enough statement from Henry who, as Stranded says, is going to have to mend some serious bridges here.

The main thing that has come out of this for me is don't these clubs have big expensive PR teams? This announcement couldn't have been rolled out worse if they got DD to plan it.

If you hear him using it in the audio, it’s clear it’s just another franchise and how it is listed on his spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations to the board. No feeling or genuine empathy at all.

He’s not sorry he did it, he’s sorry it failed this time.

I actually did propose this to UEFA and FIFA when I did another VAR presentation, and they did not like it

Interesting interview with John Barnes. Basically said, "Yay, the status quo has been maintained now let's get back to the real business of the whole of the Premier League exploiting everyone for financial gain".
