Copa America 2021

by Winston Biscuit » 31 May 2021 07:28

Was due to be co hosted by Colombia & Argentina but the former had it taken away from them 10 days ago due to widespread protests going on there. Last night Argentina had it taken from them due to Covid.

13 days until the opening match, currently no host.

Would imagine it will get canned. Argentina didn't want it anymore even before it was canned.

It may go to Chile but even some high profile players are saying it's not a great idea given the current siutation there. Only other option, given the number of players based in Europe is move it to Portugal or similar.

Now in Brazil apparently, which is crazy given the current health and political situation there.

That is what I assumed would end up happening

Going to Brazil though, which seems crazy after the Argies lost it on covid grounds!

Was just reading about how good Brazil are looking at the moment.

Not lost in the managers 24 games against other South American nations, during which they scored 60 and conceded just 6.

The manager has spoken out about wanting the Brazilian FA to arrange a number of friendlies against decent European teams before the Qatar WC as he says the local competition ain't good enough (paraphrasing)

Representation for Blackburn Rovers in the form of Ben Brereton. Former England under-19 international, Brereton's mother is Chilean and he jumped at the chance to represent Chile after a solid season for Rovers. And he started, in the Copa America against Messi's Argentina.

He even went full Chile and took common local nomenclature, with his mother's last name following his father's on his shirt.

The intention is to make the Copa every 4 years played in the same summer as the Euros so why can’t they just wait to 2024 for the next one given the current mess ?

Probably as they would have had to pay money back to broadcasters, sponsors etc. So money.

I will be surprised if both teams still have eleven players on the pitch at the end of this game.

To a large extent Messi's win, even if the final was his quietest game. Argentina scored 12 goals in the tournament - Messi scored 4 of them, directly assisted 5, and was involved in the build-up to 2 of the other 3.
