Club vs Country

by WestYorksRoyal » 29 Jun 2021 08:55

Simple question really. I remember being asked it in 06, and Reading won for me every day of the week back then.

But now I'm older, it has switched entirely. It's partly because I've realistically seen Reading achieve everything they can; we've won the league, and playing in the Premier League isn't everything. Maybe if I put in the option of "Doing a Leicester" or even "Doing a Wigan" and lifting the FA Cup it would be different.

But it's also the occasion. I follow Reading every week and, in the main, nobody except for a handful of friends and this forum really cares or gets excited. A major international football tournament, on the other hand, is an event everybody gets excited about, and I can share the highs and lows with friends and colleagues. Winning it would be awesome.

Maybe the other point is around the teams and clubs themselves. Much has been said about Reading losing our way recently, and despite the progress last season, I'm not sure I'll ever feel as connected to the team and club as in 06. England, on the other hand, have done the opposite. Individually, I don't have much against our "golden generation" players, but as a collective the entire set up was loathsome. Compare that to this current set up led by the dignity and class on Southgate and it's not comparable.

Obviously I have no choice. England could lose tonight and Reading could be relegated due to a transfer embargo and points deduction. Sucks to be us if so. But, if that were to happen, tonight would hurt more, while going back to supporting Reading would not be the same consolation it was in 06.

England to win the Euros.

Couldn't give a toss if Reading go up or not, I like the Championship and it is our level. We will never be able to compete at the top level given our current ownership so what is the point? I don't want to end up like Burnley, just floating around near the bottom of the Premier League fighting for survival each season and getting dicked by all the good teams.

Poor form not having an Ian Royal option.

England to win Euro's no doubt.

Have experienced RFC going up twice before, and I know the result of that in the year or 2 after too.

The only four teams I care about, in that order.

Shocked I am the first person here to vote RFC over England.

I think if we were suddenly taken over by a multi billionaire my answer might be different but given our current state, I could only see misery if we were to get promoted. I also took into consideration I haven't really missed watching Reading, the pandemic has taught me I don't need to spend all that money to watch a bang average team play.

I think as a nation we need something like winning a major competition, would almost make everyone forget the misery of the last year.

I respect your view, but I cannot relate to this, particularly that sentence. Following RFC is emotional, not logical. I cannot change teams/allegiance. It is the team I care about. Going up and, against the odds, doing well/surviving would be fantastic.

Of course I would love us to stuff Germany tonight. 5-0 please.

Putting this poll on the International board instead of Team board probably has a skew on the answers.

Similar to you club came first originally.

But the PL is a bit shit, so England tournament win over promotion any day now.

RFC win the League or FA Cup or PL over England win the World Cup still though.

we have a billionaire owner, whose financial input is limited by FFP, not his wallet.

You make a very good point! Hard to believe it with the FFP in place/our limited spending recently.

Couldn't really give a fcuk about international football. Never have, never will. Unless a Reading player is involved.
