Joao Replacement

by Royal_jimmy » 18 Aug 2021 09:26

Who do you think we can realistically get on loan to replace Joao who is expected to be out for up for 6 months?

Jordan Hugill won't be getting much game time at Norwich this season with the players they've signed. Maybe too expensive. Would be a good option though.

In the squad at present we have:

Joao - injured until at least January
Puscas - lacking form, low on confidence, "does not fit system"
Femi Azeez - is he a striker?
Jahmari Clarke - inexperienced
Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan - in good form but only ever played in the U23s
Nahum Melvin-Lambert - in good form but out on loan until November
McNulty - out on loan then out of contract

So, what would we be looking for? Ideally an experienced, quality striker who plays in a similar style to Joao who is available on loan or is a free agent willing to take low wages. Sounds like quite a big ask.

The problem is who will want to come to us and get paid pennies. Unless a club just wants their reserves to get game time and are prepared to pay for most of the wages in a loan deal we are a bit stuffed - anyone decent will have already been snapped up. Anyone free that is half decent will want good wages to join us. We need a miracle

Well. I know this would go down like a fart in a lift but there is one ex prem target man out of contract at the moment who would probably join a champ team. Problem is his fitness and wages but he did play 18 league games last season and needs to realistic with his wage demands. He ain’t getting a premier league gig again. we are in a desperate situation which call for desperate measures. Ladies and gentlemen I give you….. Andy Carroll

Wouldn't be adverse to him on loan, if Norwich are happy for us to only cover 8k or less of his wages.

Relatively slim pickings on the free agent front but names that jump out as options*:

Connor Wickham
Daniel Sturridge
Hal Robson-Kanu
Andy Carroll
Wilfred Bony
Yaya Sanogo
Rudy Gestede

*list taken from out of contract players on Transfermarkt - so some may be unavailable now, and only looked at players with experience of playing in England. None massively excite but could be options if we need someone.

In terms of ability I would take him all day long. In terms of fitness I would avoid like the plauge. That said if he wants a 5k a week deal until January then it is something we would have to seriously consider.

Definitely an underwhelming list of options who are past it in their careers. On the other hand I'd rather one of them than no one

Personally if Puscas does not come good I would rather we gave Clarke a run. Big lad and did ok last night. Better to give an 18 year old a go than a has been on the way down.

Anyone turning their noses up at that list really need to think about the circumstances. In normal circumstances yes of course we shouldn’t be considering these type of players. But what options have we got? We cannot pay a transfer fee so we are limited to free transfers or loans. The loans are restricted as we are not allowed to pay a fee/limited to a very small fee. Unless there is a decent striker available on loan that meets the above criteria these players are the market we are going to have to dip our toe into. I see derby only signed baldock till January we could offer a 6 month contract to one of these players. Puts them in the shop window if they do well and we would not be tied into a contract if they are shit. It’s not ideal but we cannot rely on what we’ve got for the next 6 months.

:| A 10 minute cameo against a shit Bristol city team and you think he can lead the line for us for the next 6 months.

Could we tempt Glenn Murray out of retirement?

serious suggestion now - Shane Long on loan until January

Southampton would need to charge no loan fee and ask for less than 8k in wage contribution. He is currently on 60k pw. What do you think the chances are?

Seriously people need to pull their heads out their arses. Suggestions like this are far beyond our permitted means. We’re looking at premier league youngsters on tiny wages, or old has beens on free transfers.

Whilst I tend to agree, you may see some interesting* moves happening towards the end of the window as PL clubs know who will be in their named squad - could be some players such as Long available for a small contribution as it would be better for the player and his club for him to be somewhere else playing than training without any chance of making a first team appearance.

Not doubting long might be made available, and if he were I’m sure there will be other clubs in a better situation ready to gazump any bid we made. It’s not outside the realms of possibility, sure. it ain’t happening though.

That list is depressing.

Wickham would fit right in with his injury record though

he was made available in January and went to Bournemouth. Accept that WCBAP given our current situation but he still lives locally I believe and perhaps still has an affinity to the club. Also 34 and OOC at the end of this season - so getting close to your definition I think of a has been.
