Feel sorry for the lad, seems a decent chap and never nice to have someone get injured, whether he's ours or not.

However, this may just come at a very useful time as in my view Rafael is average at best. Too many errors in him mitigated only by great saves every now and then. I hope he makes a full recovery quickly and comes back but I'm also quite keen to get a better look at Southwood.

Assuming he hit himself with a hammer to avoid playing in that cluster oxf*rd again.

Or maybe punched one of the clowns in front of him / on the dugout.

CountryRoyal Good. Rafael has peaked and is offering us little. He used to at least be a good shot stopper at close distances but even that has seemed to slip.

Southwood is not the finished article, far from it, but I’ve seen enough to be encouraged and he’s not going to get better by sitting on the bench. If we’re going to get relegated I can confidently say it won’t be due to our choice of goalkeeper.

Southwood to start and I’d have CBC on the bench. Andressen seems to be impressing on his loan spell and it’s probably productive to keep him there for consistency.

I’d be really disappointed if we brought in another goalkeeper. I don’t think it’s necessary at all.

This.

Southwood has deserved a chance. Main concern with him for me is he doesn't seem very big. But obviously got talent.

Agree CBC should do for cover on the bench.

Just think, if we hadn't just thrown the last three cup matches Southwood might have almost double the experience in our team to go into starting in the league.

wtf? bloody hell

Broken hand is a couple of months for a keeper you'd think. And yep does sound like punching something in frustration

typical Reading though, lack of planning not having an injured left back on the books.
Should have kept Obita....

Would be a bit longer than that I'd imagine depending on the break. You have to be a bit careful with keepers for obvious reasons and give it a bit longer than you might think. 2 months for the injury to heal but I'd say an extra month to build confidence in it again. He will have to be psychologically right to use it again. Having recently come back from something similar, its taken me weeks to get my head around using my hand to stop a fast moving ball.

I assumed it was a back injury….

Definitely we should play Southwood and let him have his chance. I think he could be another Alex McCarthy, but hopefully unlike the clusterfuck situation that meant Alex left us, Luke ends up being our first choice keeper for the next 10 years.

Lol, his contract is up at the end of the season... chances on him impressing and declining an extension to go elsewhere?

I’m surprised Forest and Bournemouth aren’t showing an interest at the mere thought he might play for our first team. Maybe Liverpool are being a bit more cautious and will wait until he played a couple of games first.

Reading apparently have an option to extend Southwood’s current deal by 1 year, not sure though whether that means the club can just activate the clause and that’s that or whether the player concerned has to also agree the extension.

They already took up that option, his contract was due to expire this summer otherwise.

Hound it'd be nuts to bring in an emergency into the first 11. Happy with either Southwood or JA

Rafael's been poor this season anyway.

IMO it’s nonsense to suggest Rafael has been poor this season. Are you J Low in disguise. He struggles to understand goalkeeping - a completely different & highly specialist position - too! (only gave Rafael 4/10 v QPR despite some great saves and seems to believe it’s always possible to parry out wide regardless of where the shot is taken from and how long the keeper has to react/move. And isn’t JA out on season long loan and not able to be recalled until after Xmas at earliest?

Why do you think it would be nuts?

It seems many of our fans think that everything the academy produces will be able to step up to the first team.

I’m intrigued to see if Southwood has improved since his howler of a debut performance against Huddersfield last season. I guess we’ll find out tomorrow night.

Southwood obviously earnt his contract extension. At 23 has a long career ahead of him. If he is no 1 next season. Then the experience will be invaluable whatever league we end up in.
