From Despair To Where? I think Hoilett offers experience and some genuine width. I don't necessarily see him as a regular starter but he offers options off the bench and is more than good enough to be a squad player.

Ye-ah... I'd still like to see a bit more from him for that. But he's done better than I originally thought he would when he has played.

Great thread as ever thanks Sutekh.

I was going to honour it by saying nothing useful and making a typical shit Millsy joke instead about signing Aluko, which some would have believed and others would have rolled their eyes at.

Then I thought nah let me say Paul Brayson because I remember him because being useless. Looking at his stats I never realised he scored ONE goal in FORTY TWO appearances. And cost us £100k in 1998. Makes Puscas look like Ronaldo in comparison. But then he did cost eighty times more so .. has he scored 80 goals? No. So. I dunno where I'm going with this. No point whatsoever but I'll still press submit.

According to this https://www.verdict.co.uk/football-tran ... inflation/
football transfer fees in the Premier League have increased 40-fold between 1990 and 2018

I doubt that inflation was linear - more like exponential. So I'd say transfer fees probably increased 30 times between 1998 and 2019.

So, Paul Brayson would cost you £3m in 2019 terms and netted 1 goal in 42 appearances

Meanwhile Pușcaș has 18 goals in 82 appearances. So approximately 9 times the goal-rate for 2.5 times the cost.

Bargain of the century :D

Interesting thanks.

And thus is born the Brayson Index to judge all our signings.

Puscas has a Brayson Index of 3.6

If we say we'd be content with say 36 goals from Puscas Id say we'd want a Brayson Index of at least 7 for future striker purchases.

Renew Southwood, Holmes, Rinomhota, Laurent and Azeez as priorities.

Offer Swift a renewal with reduced wages and a low release clause. He’ll probably turn it down, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Probably renew Halilovic.

Probably release Hoilett.

Renew Dann or Morrison, unless both have clearly declined below Championship standard, in which case release both, or they are our first choice pairing, in which case renew both.

Renew Yiadom or Araruna.

Release Rafael, unless he has reclaimed his spot in the side, we have got promoted, or he indicates he is willing to sit on the bench and be compensated accordingly.

Release McNulty.

Youngsters: renew Bristow, Samuels, Dorsett, Abbey, NML; if applicable, also renew Clarke, Osorio, and Leavy; probably K Ehibhationham

If we're gping to use the Brayson index then it is important to get it right. It was in fact 49 games as a striker and 1 goal (possibly 42 was the number of League games). Also, the 1 was in a game we lost 3-1 so it had no positive impact.

And the staggering thing is that at the time some people tried to insist that he was a good player.

He was out of his depth but he gave 100% in the games he played. He left for Cardiff in 2000 and found his level in non league. Played for England C though which is the non league equivalent of an England cap.

The only striker I've seen get a break away 1v1 with the keeper and I expected him not to score. He obliged.

Paul Brayson went on to score over 200 career goals at various levels. Perhaps he was a very late maturer.

Zip Is Tetek still with until 2023? I thought his contract expired in 2022.

Can’t find anything that contradicts transfermarkt which states 30 June 2023 as his contract expiry. Of course if anyone knows better feel free to update.

Tetek sounds like some sort of transformer toy.

Just saying.

Good question from ya man on twitter - if you could only keep one OOC player (ex Swift) who would it be?

Southwood isn't OOC is he?

EDIT - just seen we've got an option for another year.

Azeez for me - got the Antonio's about him but better and you all know how good i am spotting a player. Dont want him to be our next biggest transfer mistake behind Antonio.

Goalkeepers in main, certainly through an academy are of similar ability or pick up a top keeper in league one or two for pittance and low wage. So yes, Azeez all day long.

I think it's very important to keep hold of Southwood, Andresson is getting mixed reviews at Morecambe so it might be too soon to rely on him as a 1st choice keeper. That said, they concede a lot of goals with him or their other keeper Letherhen so maybe their defence is the issue!
