I agree.

Yep so change the system, don’t just wait for the inevitable to happen.

Ok, but the only alternative when you can’t pass the ball would seem to be hoofball

ish....I mean you can go more direct and it not be hoofball as such. You could otherwise just try to get it out of the middle of the pitch, out to the wings and in the channels. There is stuff you can do without going full on Wimbledon 1980s. Carroll and Hoilett would be 2 that can certainly play the more direct game, suspect Puscas alongside Carroll might not be terrible at it either

You put some pace up top and play it in to the channels - so the best thing to have done was probably bring off Carroll and push someone like Azeez/Hoilett up top or even have Clarke up there. They don't need to do much but harry and win the odd ball, just slow the ball down so it takes longer to come back.

Hound Think I'm in a smallish minority that doesn't think we are actually in a particularly bad position off the field. Owners willing to invest, new training ground, ground itself is holding up, points deduction done with a fairly generous settlement for next year. Academy production line in good working order. Most of the big earners off the books soon.

We ain't going anywhere fast and really do need to not go down. But stay up this year, and as long as we are sensible enough preseason and stay up again the following year, we should be good to go. I think a lot of the doom and gloom is overdone.

When we were really in the shit was the Stam through to Clement days. Terrible squad full of long term expensive contracts. Really did fear for us badly if we'd gone that year, and we couldn't have argued we didn't deserve to go down that year if it had happened.

I agree with this as an extent, the club as a whole isn't in a bad place but something is wrong and feels like it could threaten our Champ place if we aren't careful. Something does need to change and the manager is the easy thing to switch but that hasn't helped us before.

As mentioned before, I don't have a massive problem with VP but we are getting to the stage where the club need to commit to him and give him another 2 or 3 year contract to guide us through these more difficult times, or pay up the remaining months at some point soon (by March I would say) and either replace him immediately or begin the search for a replacement in good time and let Gilkes take the reigns for the interim.

Millsy You're right it's not hard - there is MORE bedwetting now because of those 5mins of play. How does giving up a 2-0 lead mean a man has to lose his job? 0-0 would have been different. Don't let two in, but totally toothless at home. I'll tell you exactly what it is - people are just knee-jerking because they're butthurt at losing a 2-0 lead and their feelings felt hurt in those 5mins. Boohoo.

It's not because we threw away a two goal lead. It's because IT KEEPS FCUKING HAPPENING.

It's happened three times.

It's annoying, I get that.

He has a flaw - we all agree.

But what's the outcome? Do we lose EVERY lead? Do we not win games ever because of this flaw? All things considered, all points lost due to losing leads... are we now worse off than we expected us to be at the beginning of the season with the embargo, player losses etc etc.. when we were simply hoping to avoid relegation? That's before we were hit with ridiculous injuries and the points deduction. Despite that, warts and all, we're still 3 points off relegation. Without the points deduction and with all the mitigations above we'd be NINE points from relegation and TWELVE points from the playoffs.

So yes it 'keeps' (i.e. 3 times) happening, and we agree it's a flaw but what is the outcome? Bad manager, must be sacked? Or... yeah it's annoying but we're on track and doing better than expected.

The problem is since the 2nd time V Blackpool, we've been in a bit of a tailspin. At 2-0 that night, we were about to go 5th and even the deduction didn't look like it would hurt us too much and just make the play-off chase a bit trickier.

We ended up losing and including that defeat our record since is P11 W2 D3 L6 - relegation form. Our more recent form is a little better as we lost 4 on the bounce at the start of this run but that's still only 9pts from 7 games. If we maintain that form (over past 7) we will get to 52pts which should be enough but I can understand why people are getting ever more twitchy and letting a 2 goal home lead slip again is always going to play into that.

AS discussed before the game, 3 points would have been absolutely massive. The fact we had it in our grasp and gave it away in the last 5 mins is obviously going to cause concern about the mentality as much as anything else.

There is a lot of frustration that we were so close to getting 3 points which would have made our position far more healthier than it is now.

As said, I don't think if we changed manager tonight we'd end up significantly better off like some teams end up doing. I can't imagine we'd finish mid table and comfortably clear, I think we'd still end up safe.

well, it's what teams who go down do.

I'm frankly astounded the poll is as close as it is. i can only assume the reason why people are voting 'in' is not because they have faith in Pauno. It's because people are concerned we wouldn't replace him with anyone better. which is like saying I'm going to continue driving my car that's just failed its MOT because I don't believe there is anything better out there. Well guess what? there are loads more cars out there that are not going to drive us off the edge of the cliff because the brakes don't work.

We are at the bottom though, teams at the bottom usually concede a high number of goals, hence why they are at the bottom.

I'm under no illusion that we shouldn't surrender leads as often or as easily as we do and that is a concern that another manager would improve, I just can't see another manager having us significantly better off because at the end of the day, they will still have the same embargo to deal with this month, the players aren't likely to come back any quicker from injuries etc. The same problems that Pauno is up against would still be there for a new manager.

Yes, we may not surrender as many leads and we may be more defensively sound with McCarthy or Warnock for half a season and I don't doubt both of them would keep us up, but I believe Pauno will keep us up as well.

Wouldn't make that decision now with still half a season to go tbh.

If we survive and he is willing to commit to a new deal on a reasonable salary, then yes I would.

I don't believe he was hired for just the short-term, I believe that, when he was hired, the club and Pauno himself were probably looking at a 3-5 year project here. Unfortunately for Pauno, he has to get through the rest of this season and all of next under restrictions before he can begin to build the squad further and to his style. I think it's forgotten that some of the players that he signed this summer might (and probably wouldn't have) been signed if we were in a better position, where we could spend some money let's say.

If the trend of results continues like it has into late Feb/March time and/or we fall into the relegation zone, maybe I'd consider sacking him in favour of someone else. But it's not like he hasn't been able to get the team playing well and getting results where we weren't at one time. We had a poor first 5/6 games and we then went on a good run for 5/6 games, then a poor run before it's began to level itself out as a bottom of the table kind of form, which is to be expected considering we are near the bottom.

And that says it all, if you haven't the confidence to say yes now, 6 months before expiry there is your answer. How can we expect players to sign contract extensions when they don't know who the manager will be next season.

I'm not sure players care that much. Managers come and go.

We might not even be in a position to renew his contract yet depending on what our EFL business plan actually is and what the finer details are. I'd rather wait until we have clarified what division we are in and who is staying/going before we go all in on offering him a new contract.

Not to mention we might even sack him in a month or two's time (or sooner) as well which wouldn't exactly be financially viable.

Certain players warm to the manager and their style. They might feel if a manager commits means they can flourish under him / her if they sign.
And lets say he is sacked and a Warnock come in...they play a more aggressive style that a player might go f that i am not gunna commit to playing like this for 2/3 years.
VP some how does have a knack of getting in some decent caliber players too. Would Baba / Carroll / Hoilett / Hal / TBD / Dann have signed if we had Mick McCarthy do you think we could have got those type of players in

Some players obvs have their favourite managers, but I think generally the player has to be of the mentality that they'll just work with whoever. You're right in that those players mentioned may well have been persuaded by Pauno to come, but that's not to say they wouldn't extend under a different manager. Doubt Hoilett, Carroll or Dann want to start moving around all over the place, TDB and Baba won't stay on and Hal - well wouldnt lose any sleep if he didnt renew

In fairness, most players speak pretty highly of Pauno. I know they generally do with any manager to the press, but I remember Moore's comments on him about how he completely changed the atmosphere of the club when he first arrived and how different he made life at the club, but for the better. I know we are a long way from that point, but I don't think that opinion has changed too much.

Moore basically praises every manager as amazing until they leave. Remember him saying how brilliant Gomes was

True, it just seemed "different" when Pauno arrived. Whether that was because Bowen left and the unusual way we appointed him was far better than the players expected, who knows.

I didn't mind Gomes. Obviously had a clear idea of how he wanted to play but he felt as if the club treated him unfairly but he obviously lost the dressing room. So much promise for 1 week only during his time.

Hmm..

That is very fair and logical and if I'm fair I have to recall that I was arguing exactly the same last season. Honeymoon 7 games aside we were rubbish so I was saying looking at the final position was useless.

Hmmm.... I guess I just have faith that our good run of games wasn't an equally isolated burst. Bollocks.
