Ok so say the funding stops and we go bust. What’s Dai’s exist strategy? How does he cash out?

It could possibly depend if the owner would want to write off the debts and sell.

Brogue
Jagermesiter1871 Could easily turn to the stadium in to an expanded Reading gate retail park. Maybe a DFS and a good size B&M. Also could add a Taco Bell drive thru. oxf*rd it - go on then.

Dai only owns the stadium and the footprint it sits on. And the hotel which isn’t owned by dai is attached to it. The surrounding land is owned by the Thais. The stadium is also a ‘community asset’ which means they couldn’t get planning for a change of use.

The fact that the owners of Forbury Retail Park are applying for planning to build another 900 flats would possible indicate the death of such retail outlets is approaching

Indeed and the retail park by Morrisons. And a possible new site for the police station has been mooted as going on the business park where Matalan is.

A lot depends on whether the stadium would be included in the price if he sold the club. If it isn't, he can just charge the new owners a high rent each year.

In some ways you have to ask what the value of RFC actually is without the stadium and training ground.

The same value of most football clubs? Pretty much zero

Most clubs are just rich people’s playthings nowadays. We’re hardly ina unique situation

It's partly why Derby are in the situation they are in as well. They don't own their ground and a lot of their players are out of contract and not worth all that much, so what are you buying if you buy Derby? The training ground and the academy which in the grand scheme of things will be depreciating in value as well.

Like with most football clubs, you aren't buying to make money. You're buying the club badge and paying the assets associated to the badge. It's a secondary project for most who have the money to do so.

Are we bigger than what Beijing Renhe were personally to the Dai's? Probably not. They were (possibly still are) on the Forbes billionaires list, what are we to him really? Just another cost. It will be a plan he is trying to make work, if he gets fed up and it doesn't work, he will either walk/sell.

We could definitely do with a change of ownership somehow! But worried it'll be awkward and may make things worse

You don`t buy clubs outside of the PL to make money.

Yeah owning a football club is about status for most, very rare you'll make a killing on it.

Exception to that rule is Mike Ashley who ran the football club he owned as a business. Spent very little, sold it for double what he paid. Even then he didn't do any due diligence and wasn't aware they were £100m in debt.

Brogue What’s Dai’s exist strategy?

Not sure but I think it's the usual i.e. provide oxygen, glucose and other basic nutrients to his cells via activities such as breathing, eating and the like.

Well the permission would soon be granted if the club went bust. RBC wouldn't have an empty relic to an extinct football club taking up space that could be used to generate footfall and cash. The 'community asset' stuff is about protecting the stadium whilst the club exists.

Not sure that I agree, nor to some extent with OMA's argument that a football club, or at least one of Reading's stature, is about status. Football is littered with failed owners. They buy a small-to-medium sized club, spend a small-to-medium sized budget and hope to get to the promised land and make a killing. If they fail, they've only spent a bit of their fortune - if they succeed, they have doubled it.

I think a club like Reading is/was exactly the sort of club you buy to make money in the medium-term.

I just want Dai to hurry up and sell the club as we’ll be worth less next season in L1.

Glad to see others are now finally wising up to what a dangerous parasite he is

Training ground would make a good facility for another Premiership outfit.

Would need planning permission and there would be thousands of objections.

Worked well for Brighton in the end.

We could play at Wycombe for a season or two; nearly go out of the league (while the development went ahead and the owners got their money back) and then ten years later, build a new stadium in Sonning, become a communist outpost.

But play in the Premier League; win nothing, lose nothing and grind out ‘meaningful’ (according to ‘Sky Bet’ et al) 0-0 and 1-1 draws.

Rotherham fans were having fun on Sunday …..
