Joined Swindon Town as a player-manager in August 2006. Played one game for the club before agreeing by mutual constant to not continue playing for the club. Instead managed to complete his coaching badges while at Swindon.

Joined Macclesfield Town two months later in October 2006, once again as a player-manager. At this time Macclesfield were 7 points off safety. The club avoided relegation on the last day of the season with Ince being named League Two Manager of the Month in January 2007. Retired from playing while at Macclesfield Town.

Joined MK Dons as a manager in June 2007. Won the Football League Trophy and League Two with the club, ultimately securing promotion to League One.

Joined Premier League Blackburn Rovers in June 2008. Was sacked in December 2008 after winning 3 games in 17.

On 18 February 2013, Blackpool appointed Ince as manager on a one-year rolling contract. He had been watching the team, for which his son Tom played, in person for over a year.

As a man I think he has a lot of the qualities we will need going forward, especially for a relegation struggle. As a coach I worry he has been away too long, had he been active over the past 5 years then I'd have no complaints.

I worry that Tom Ince has got in to someone's ear and let them know that daddy is available and cheap so they've taken a punt. It's so left field that someone must have suggested it to them rather than the owner seeking out Ince.

Football is a weird place. Some managers can have an impact for a short time.

Really we need to look at his record in the first games after taking over.

At Blackpool he had a loss, three draws in the first four. Then only two loses for the rest of the season.

The next season he had 5 wins in the first 6 games, with one draw. Then a loss, then four draws, then 2 wins out of three, then loss, draw, win before 8 losses out of 9 with one draw.

I would. The prospect when it was first muted, alarmed me. At best, somewhat unproven and didn't survive long at Basingstoke. Being a club hero doesn't necessarily make someone a good manager/coach. I'm assuming by virtue of his position in the academy that he must have all of his coaching badges.

Would definitely have wanted him to have someone working with him, although Paul Ince wouldn't have been on my radar!

Interestingly, Ince is on record as saying this about a managerial comeback:

"If you're an owner and said, 'listen Paul, you've got a three-year contract and three years to get where we want to get to. Don't worry about year one or year two, this is where we want to be after three years and if you haven't done that, then you've lost your job,' then I'll take it.

"If not, then I've got no interest."

His overall record is ok and you also need to put into context where he was managing on each occasion. No alarm bells ringing.
